Bangai cardinals

I love the bangai cardinals, but havn't had any luck keeping them. does anyone know if there is any truth to the idea that buying them very young will increase the chance for survival?

I am not sure about that. I have heard of a lot of people having trouble keeping them lately and am wondering what is causing all of the problems. I know most of them are wild caught and wonder if they changed something in the collection process.

My guess would be that the smaller ones may have been captive bred and the bigger ones may have been wild caught. I've never had them. The wife wants them but from what I've read they aren't fond of too much flow.

Interesting, three days ago my local store had a tank full of perfect looking cardinals, yet half of them were laying on the sand having trouble breathing. I thought they were easy fish to keep, guess not.

The wild caught ones are difficult to keep sometimes. The aquacultured are hardier but wholesale cost is double what the wild caught ones go for. Most stores stock the wild caught ones for this reason. If it's in the $20 range it is probably wild caught and if it's around $40 it's aquacultured most likely. You can see how getting a small school of aquacultured bangaiis can be expensive.

I don't know if you have a local Petco, or if they can order from ORA... but our T/R bangaiis from them are cheap. Last time I looked they were going for 19.99 - you can't beat that! I've had wonderful luck with them.

I have a pair of bangaiis and so far they are doing fine, but yes they seem to not like alot of flow. Turned out I ended up with two males and the smaller one was being forced to hide either behind the overflow box or some rocks. I ended up putting him in the sump for now. The tank is pretty peaceful with one bangaii in it now and I have thought of trying to find a female, but I read that once a m/f pair up it makes life hell for others in the tank.

After a failed attempt at keeping them four years ago I decided to try again and purchased three. One month after bringing them home two of the three had paired up and the male to my surprise actually had a mouth full of eggs. Its been a little over a year. They have since breed multiple times and the third cardinal usually stays out of the pairs way, and they seem to leave him alone with the exception of an occasional chase.

Petco kind of stinks in my oppinion. and $19.99 seems very expensive for Bangaii's. I sell them for:Banner (Bangai) Cardinal: $8.50

But I guess you need to live near me for deals like that...
