Ok I mostly agree with these statements and I am splitting hairs on semantics here. I wouldn't say a tang is prone to stress but rather hobbyiest are prone to put it in a situation that it is not adapted to.
They are built for swimming far, which is theorized to be their response to ich outbreaks on a reef.... just swim away. At the same time I don't want to come across as saying this is a poor fish for aquariums as I have seen tangs happy healthy and long lived in aquariums that adequately met their needs. Am I rambling yet?

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

Here is my suggestions as you make your choice.

Tangs are prone to ick and stress.
Look into what causes these things in this animal.

Check out what these animals are like in the wild.

Then make your choice. Based on what you can provide the animal and what they need to be healthy.

Good Luck.

I like your approach, will do. My feeling is that i'll give up the tang...

What is ick?

Basile-
short answer is ick is a parasite present in almost all aquariums. When fish are stressed or ill the parasite multiples and attacks, making the fish sick. Water quality and changes in the tank parameters are more likely to bring this out.

Here is a good short read on ick. I think it helps explain why tangs tend to be more "prone" to ick, since they more often end up in tank situations that cause them stress.
