All I can say is wow!?!?! I know it's probably a rare breed but that's almost as much as what my car is worth. I guess there are all kinds of pockets out there.

 Yeah, there are some that hit the market that are more than that. I think it separates a hobbyist and a collector

That's about as much as I see more "common" rare species hit. I've heard the rumor of $10k angels or oddities, but I've never seen one offered for more than about $3000.

I was told that that fish was that price because collecting, packaging and shipping must happen very fast to ensure survivability. It's location in the wild is apparently difficult to make that all happen as well.

Another one you will find at that price point is the Gem Tang. This is one of the most sought after yet hard to come by tangs out there.

When I got ito this hobbie almost 30 yrs ago,the big $$ was the Black Tang.They got somewhat popular and now I don't see anybody selling them.

My LFS Fish Safari has two black tangs about 2.5" on sale for $399.99 with no guarantee.

I put up a similar post a few months ago when I didn't know what a "gem tang" was and was looking at fishbase pictures of the Zebrasoma genus. I thought that the gem tang was pretty and decided to look it up and I was floored by the price.
