What is the green and orange on my live rock?
Hello, Can someone tell me is any of this bad on my live rock? The green mushroom looking things and the orange growth on the live rock? Does any of these require special lighting, as I do not have any.
Thanks so much.

Hi Suzan
Welcome to TRT
The green are mushrooms and can do OK in lower light - what kind of lighting do you have?
The orange I can't tell what that might be

Suzan, welcome to TRT!.
Is the orange a thin layer or is it raised up? It almost looks like orange coralline algae.

I'd bet on a sponge for the orange as well, the green things are definitely mushrooms. they don't require any fancy lighting for the most part, but you will want to have something over the tank (normal fluorescent should suffice). can you tell us more of your tank?

I have an 8 watt fluorescent light, as my tank is only 6 gallons. I will be upgrading soon once I get the hang of things. The orange is like a think coating on the rock, not sure if it looks raised, just thick. Will these things survive with such low lighting? Also, I have some Xenia (sp) . I saw a centipede type creature on my rock this morning and hurried back in once it noticed I was there.
Thanks

Yup, that sure is Xenia...I would think that stuff wil survive. How long do you keep your lights on?
As far as the centepede thing goes...welcome to the wonderful world of reefing!! You will be seeing lots of cool stuff like that all the time now

The centapede looking things are likely bristle worms (I like them and think there good for a tank), and I also think that the oringe is likely a sponge.
I would not buy any coral at this time with only an 8 watt light,.. even though you do have a small tank you need a certian level of light to punch through the coral tissue and do any good for them,.. and I'm not sure you have it.

My lights are on a timer. They turn on at 9 AM and go off at 9 PM. Is that ok?

On the left side of the picture, there is purple coralline algae. Compare the hardness/texture of the orange to the purple. If you have to scrape it off, then it is just orange coralline. If it is soft and you can scrape it fairly easy with your fingernail (or similar) then it is probably a sponge.

The orange seems pretty hard. Also, do you have to feed the Xenias special food, and add chemicals? We were told to add calcium, Iodine. Is this true??

Never had Xenia so I can't answer that. As for the orange, if it is hard, then it is probably coralline algae. It comes in all kinds of colors.

Thanks
