sinularia concerns

Greetings - first post . I just started a 28g 186 watt HQI JBJ nano tank and transferred my corals from their previous home for the past 4 months- a 14 g biocube with 76 watt CFB lighting. The corals have been in the new tank for about a month. Tank cycled for 6 weeks before adding them. Temp 78, SG 1.025, nitrates 0, calcium 400, pH 8.3, add strontium supplement every 4 days, change 15 %- 20 % water every week. All my corals look good but my neon green sinularia is misbehaving. At first it appeared to love the switch to the new tank, extending out for several weeks like it never did before. However for the past week it has shrunken up not extending its polyps from either two stalks. Its color still looks great but instead of looking like a cactus it looks like a tiny " hulk fist". To make matters worse when I was rearranging some landscaping tonight a piece of live rock fell on it. In the middle of the bigger stalk there is a 1.5 cm linear streak of grey where the green was scrapped off by the rock. I have heard that finger corals will hunker down for a while but I figured a week plus without extending its polyps was cause for concern. I have tried placing it in different areas of the tank, more current , less current, more light, less light without much change. On one hand it isnt disintergrating and its colors are still vibrant,on the other its still closed up. ? delayed acclimation to new tank? Any thoughts or input is appreciated.

Leathers are that way sometimes...I've had some large specimens close up for a few days after have large branches "fragged"...the injury you describe may be causing it stay closed while it heals...if everything looks good like you say, then I would suggest picking a spot where you like it (preferably with a flow rate that would make it sway but not beat it up) and leave it be...leathers can be very picky when they get handled and moved around...each time you attempt to move it and make it happier you are probably making it "mad" again and so the process starts all over again...I have a frag of Sinularia that I just moved from my frag tank to my display earlier this week...it has yet to inflate...today is the first day that it even looks like it's trying...I've also "rehabbed" some leathers that had damage and they have always done very well, so I would not be overly worried about the "injured" spot...HTH.

I agree with Jnicho and think you just need to give it a little more time as it may be going through a normal molt. Even my toadstools will close up for a day or two if I just happen to brush them while cleaning the tank. They can be temperamental at times, but usually end up coming back around and looking better than ever after the molt is completed. Just make sure you have enough flow to blow the slime layer off the coral as it starts sloughing.

Good point on making sure the "slime" gets removed...I've had a few pieces of the "slime" get stuck in the branches on occasion...gently using a turkey baster will normally do the job if that happens.

Thanks for the feedback. I am like a mother hen here fretting over everything in my tank. Sometimes I think and worry about every aspect of maintaining a reef tank I wonder why I put myself though it. It beats Golfing

LOL! I hear you...I have some rather expensive blasto's that are not opening as big as usual that are causing me a little stress...best advice I've heard is "sit on your hands"!
