Question about frags-
Hey, im new to the hobby and i was looking to get more info about coral frags. How long do most take to grow to a nice decent size? Would you reccomend getting a fully grown coral compared to a frag? How easy are frags compared to regular corals? Thanks for your help,
Greg

Each species will grow at a different rate. And, that species will grow differently in different water qualities/chemistry. As a general rule frags grow faster than whole colonies (as they are trying to get ready for sexual reproduction). Also the growth of a small frag is more visable and liniar as larger pieces are often adding bulk or growing in a sphere which is hard to see.
Some corals do great as frags, some do better as colonies. If a frag is allowed to settle a few weeks before shipping, and it is going to a stable environment, it has a pretty good chance of survival. Obviously a larger piece has more mass to survive on while the chips are down.

I have a Ricordea Mushroom (In the pic).
Uknown to me they eat fish food!!! I was feeding my fish and a flake fell upon it. Didnt think any thing about it. Then about 2 minutes later it had moved. The mouth had open and it was stuffing it in. So if fed it another,, then another,, and another. Before I knew it, It had eaten more fish food then all three of my fish! I think it would of aten more but I was affraid it was a stupid creature and would eat till it explodes!?!? Would it? Should I even be feeding it fish food? It seems to prefure Tetra Mini Flakes. Like all my fresh and salt do. Ive tried other expensive brands and type and they just dont eat it. Only my coral beuaty will eat any thing diffrent and that is New Life Spectrum.

Though they will even seem to eat large pieces of shrimp... I mean they can really open up that mouth, they are likely to be put in the same category as an anemone. That is to say, they expend more energy trying to eat a large chunk than they get from it. I think they can only take in so much at once and will end up spitting out the excess.... So if you do feed, smaller the better.
It is darn fun to watch though.
I don't target feed mine any longer and I have seen no change in their growth, health, color.
