Out of control toadstool

Ok...so I have had my aquarium since June of 06; it is a 125 gal reef. One of the very first corals I put in it was a small toadstool leather that was about 6 inches in diameter.

Today that coral is probably about 1 1/2 feet across and when stretched out (and at a slight angle) can almost touch the glass on both sides of the aquarium. Is there any way to safely reduce the size of something like this or am I going to have to see about removing him from my tank?

This may sound cruel, but you can actually cut the crown of the toadstool leather into smaller sections. Each separate section will eventually grow into another full blown toadstool leather. You may even be able to find other reefers that would be willing to trade you other corals for your toadstool frags.

Out of all of the potential problems a reefer can have, I would say that this is one that could be worked out to your advantage. You may be able to sell it to your LFS for store credit if you cannot find a local buyer. I have sold a lot through craigslist. Good luck, my toadstool has not been growing at all, still looks healthy though.

I do this all the time with mine. Do just like Wolf suggests. Decide on a diameter you want the coral to be at when you're done, and then cut a ring out frm the outside in to where you want it. Use a scalpel or sharp, clean scissors. Once you are finished, you'll have a piece looking like - in your case - a huge orange peel. Cut those into pieces, and sell 'em off. Those fleshy little chunks will each grow into a toadstool of its own.

Thank you very much for all the replies...I didn't mean to post and bounce but I had to take the kids camping. I kind of figured I would just be able to cut it back but I just wanted to make sure that was the case.
