Name this frag (polyp?) for newbie
I was given this little frag...I think its a star polyp of some kind. I've been a "fish" guy and this is my first attempt at a coral.
I've had it about six weeks. Thought at first it was going to die. The arms retracted and the "skin" towards the right end was regressing to expose what looked like a blue skeleton. Now the pink skin has grown back and covered the blue part (the narrow little extension towards at the right end). The tiny little arms were extended for this photo but sometimes they stay retracted for days at a time. They were out today. Also, I think I saw a tiny nub of a new arm on the new skin growth...
The whole thing is about one inch long. Should it be secured in some way or just allowed to sit on the substrate? It started on a live rock but got moved around (I guess by snails).

Looks similar to a devils hand, leather coral of some type... this is why I generally don't help in this area though, I'm horrible with IDs

Just doesn't look like star polyps to me. They come out of a hard skeleton, not a flsehy one. But oh well Like I said, if they didn't label the bag, I would never remember what I bought

yes...the inside could have been purple. Thought it was blue but it could have been purple.
I've been reading this forum for the past few days trying to learn about these creatures...sounds like the green star polyps are not too desirable. will I be sorry if I let it get established in the tank?

No they are very pretty and because the skin is soft, they are easy to remove, or move or frag!

heheh,
there a re a few vairations of GSP. i have seen pics of a BB tank that had them as a "carpet" very cool looking. but they can take over...
as far as the Frag, anyway to get a picture of the "mother"?
it looks a bit small and very hard to give a 100% ID i think.

I don't have access to the mother...I'll see if I can contact the guy who gave it to me to see if he remembers which frag he gave me.
Another quick question. Will it root or just lay loose on the bottom? Snails sometimes disrupt it overnight and then I "right" it in the morning....

I've seen other color morphs of "green star polyps", including a white/pink variety. Looks like it might be that.
