I have had some great leathers in the past but i only have a small frag of my carpet leather and a small piece of cabbage leather. they can really inhibit the growth of SPS coral so i try to avoid them.

I have a finger leather and I added PhosGuard to the sump and over the night my leather lost its luster and is lloking bad. I removed the PhosGuard and it looks a little bit better. The rest of the tank is looking good and no problems.. Is that normal for leathers?

Welcome to TRT!

Yes and no on that. phosguard and phosban usally have to be rinsed off pretty well.there can be a fine dust that goes in to the tank. that can hurt the leathers and other corals that are really senitive.
check your carbon well you are at the clean stage too.

How is your skimmers output? if you want to not use the phosgaurd make sure the skimmer is runnign good and keep it good and clean if possible.
i have heard of others having the same type of trouble before.

I ran the phosguard under the water maybe not as long as I should have. I dont have any carbon in the sump the water is clear and has no smell to it. I added the Phosguard to replace the old that was in the sump and my leather does not look goog since then. My skimmer output is ok it came with the sump and it looks like a cheep one and I have a very hard time getting it to work right, but when it is, it does work. I know I need a new skimmer but its shelling out the big $$$ to get a new one. Any ideas on how to help my leather bring back its luster?

i would suggest placing carbon in the tank. who else in the tank?

if you are a DIY type take alook inthe DIY section, there are a few skimmer that you can make with most parts at the home center...

you might try removing the phosgaurd, it has been talked about , that leathers like a tank with a bit of "dirtyness" to it. not proven but talked ..

I use Phos Guard and my leathers are doing great. I always wash mine out in RO water well. before I put it back in though.

Can you frag leathers? I was thinking about cutting off a small ear looking piece off of mine, and seeing if it'll grow. Dont wanna do it if it wont grow into a bigger one though lol.

I use phosban in my pod and doesn't seem to affect any of my corals. I know I rinsed it a long time tho. Here's my cabbage tho.

Question

Nice Thread

Hello all, I purchased a nice piece of LR with a soft coral on it from a guy getting rid of some of his LR, the guy told me it was a leather, but he wasn't sure exactly what kind. It has about a 2" stalk, what looks like a curled up light green star for a head and teeny tiny purple tentacles/polyps??

Not very good at pics but will try to get one if no one can ID it from description.

Thanks in Advance
