HELP!! Have Two Quick Questiosn

I have a leather coral that only stays out 3-4 hours a day and is not as long and beautiful as it was in the store. Is this normal?

Also I have a long tenacle anemone that I just purchased today, it was trying to find its place and got caught in the blower, which I turned off immediately. What do I do when I am not home?

Thanks for the info.

Welcome to TRT!

How long have you had the leather coral? They can be finicky at times, especially when just moved. They may withdraw their polyps for days at a time and then get a layer of "slime" on them which they eventually sluff off. This is how they grow. They need some flow to help get this layer off, so when its tentacles are extended you should see them waving a little in the current.

As for the anemone, it is going to move around until it finds a place that it is happy in. Sometimes they do get caught up in powerheads and it can shred them. The trick is to turn off the powerheads for a little while and let the nem try to settle in. Once it looks like it has found a spot, then turn the powerheads back on and see if it stays there. A little trial and error I am afraid.

Without knowing anything about your system, how long it has been established, what your water chemistry is like, what other critters are in the tank, what size tank, and so forth this is the best I can offer for now.

Hopefully someone more knowlegeable will respong to your questions shortly as well.

Thanks for the info it is most helpful. Our tank is new just 4 weeks old. How long can you leave the blowers off? It is a 55 gal with two blowers, have clowns, one tang, damsels, snails and a scallop. We have one mushroom polp and one finger leather. Thanks for your help.

Do you have a sump or any other type of filter running that is moving water besides just the powerheads? Another critical question I neglected to ask is how much light do you have over the tank? That might make a difference as far as the anemone goes. 4 weeks is kind of early to have all of that livestock in your tank, but you have come to the right place to get help and try to sort things out.
