Sorry guys. After saying i'd never split it i sold it to a friend who has a much larger reef tank than myself. It was looking abit out of place in my tank being so big.I already have 4 other duncans in my 4 footer including the much rarer plating type.
This is a baby piece of big momma duncan, that wasn't deliberately fragged but broke off on removal, and placed back in my tank.To give an idea of size the discosomas below it are about 2-3 inches across.

I feed the duncans three times a week using a high protein food such as octopus or krill pacifica, not brineshrimp.
Do you know duncans can also grow very well in a dark area of the tank if fed such a diet. These duncans assume the pinky red colouration of wild deep water duncans which don't photosynthesis but feed like a suncoral.

I've snapped a few more photos for you guys that like your corals. The first pic shows how this smaller duncan fits in better in my tank which is just abit crowded.
This pic shows the rarer plating aussie duncan, left hand side.An easy to keep variety which is coloured violet and pink.Another duncan infront of it,right side.
Another plating duncan.Infact half of the one in the 2nd pic which grew too big.

Hey guys I picked up a single headed Duncan last weekend. On sale at my LFS. It looked great for two days and then since it's been closed up and shriveled. All I can really see is just the mouth in the center. Is it normal for these to be closed up for long periods of time? I am a little nervous it may be dying. I tried feeding it today hoping it would help but with no change. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Had my levels checked at the fish store and are great. I have an 8 gallon biocube stock lighting and pump. Temp around 77 degrees, 7lbs of live rock, pom pom crab and camel shrimp in tank. Thanks!

Is your crab stinging it? Camel shrimp occasionally eat things too.
Duncans are on the short list of really easy things for almost anybody to grow, don't try to feed it if it's closed, it can't eat w/o it's feeding tentacles.

Hey here is a picture of it. I guess it could be the critters in the tank.
I can't tell if the tentacles are gone or just inside the hole in the middle.

They are withdrawn, most do that occasionally, but only for an hour or so during the day in my experience. The flesh looks otherwise healthy.
If your water is good, just give it time, it may take a week or so for a new addition to acclimate fully.

It's not dead, it still has all it's flesh.
There must be something in your water that it doesn't like, a week is a long time for something to stay closed. I've got three questions for you pertaining to the basic parameters of your tank.
Do you have your own testing supplies? For dkH, pH, salinity, Ca, Mg, NiO3?
Also what are your water change practices, what salt, what water, what salinity, how much, and how often?
Do you buffer, how much, how often?
