Elegance coral Why?

Are they so hard to keep on a days?
Very few reefers are able to keep them alive for a year.
what ae you thoughts?

what type and why?
what can we do to help them live longer in out tanks?

Why have they become one of the harder corals to keep alive?

Because new technology (better skimmers) is keeping the water too clean? I was tempted to try one since I have a skimmerless tank but I would hate to kill it if I'm wrong

I read a theory, that in the beginning (of keeping captive corals), elegance corals were harvested from the higher regions of the reef (3-6 meters of the surface). The ones that were harvested from the tops of the reef generally did better in captivity, thriving for many years. Now most are harvested from deeper water, hence lower light, and our tanks are just too well lit that they recede and eventually die.

I heard the above theory applied to Goniopora sp. and Alveopora sp. also.

That was my thought as well. Question? do they prefer filter feeding? I have seen them thrive in tanks with low light.

since they are coming from a "deeper" locations then they Frist did , how does the temp. of our tanks play with all of them?

Oh yeah, temps would be another problem. Tank temps would be too high.

The farther beneath the surface, the colder the water temp (generally). Since we keep our tanks at the temps found between 0-6 meters it's just too warm. Same problem arises with the catalina goby.

Sounds like this coral would do best in a species specific tank.
