Is it worth the troubles? It depends, IMHE:

Not, if feed the big colony in the tank without skimmer, that is unable to process what was left from the feeding (mostly liquid, the big piceces can be removed). It's really irritating to fight for keeping water from fouling by water changes. In a 3 months even my patience came to the end.

Yes, in the tank with a big skimmer and micron sock, with massive feedings of the other inhabitants, one more feeding twice a week changes nothing.

On the bright side:
- this coral is very bright and quite large sized (at least mine is), the impact of such splash of the sunny color is significant, especially in low lit tanks, like for the deep water fish.
- it will grow in the areas, where photosynthetic corals will have troubles.
- the brighest corals, I could find - neon green candycane, red mushrooms and tangerine swiftia - are incomparable in the brightness and the size of the colorful spot.
- it requires significantly less care, than the soft non-photosynthetic corals, that have to be fed several times a day, with a fine food, that can't be bought in a local food supermarket.
- it's very hard to kill, unless it's burned by other corals. It's babies were lost in the unfed tanks for a months, after being found and moved into the fed tank - started to grow, if nothing happened.

This link (pdf) should led to the photos of the tank, filled by tubastreas: Daniela Torsten's tank.

Would I buy it again, after what I already encountered? Yes.
After more than year, I'm in peace with it.

My big tank is newer, just before xmas I set it up. But I had a 54 gal non photo tanks for 5-6 months before that. I'm going on 19 years now with reef tanks. I started with sps corals in 92-93 up until last year I got burned out on them and started looking for a new challenge.
Full tank shot as of Dec.

I need to work on getting a good shot of the tank.
Its 8 foot long but the viewing front is only like 7 foot .
The left side was left open to get a sting ray But I don't think Im going to go that route any more.

Those pics are awesome! Good Lord Erik, that tank is coooooool! If you ever feel like knocking out some walls, you can come put one of those in my house anytime. I'm already thinking of where I would put it!
I had never seen/heard of green/black sun corals before, they're so cool looking! Now I'm starting to wonder if I should get one...

I have mine on the bottom on the tank with shade and don't direct feed them at all i feed my fishes and 3 x a week i dump in copepod and they always opens up and they seem to be doing great. and spiliting.

from what i read. they don't need light they do need to be fed to be healthy. I just feed my tank alot so i don't direct feed them.

I have a deep tank, and it's on the bottom, TomorrowI'm moving it to a higher shady spot so that its easier to feed

I have a colony of black ones.
They will send out their polyps when my lights are on anytime I put food in the water column. I target feed them 3-4 times per week.
The are under an overhand with a colony of Duncans also blocking light to them.
This pic is with the MH lights on.

The macro shot is with lights off using a flash

i really like the look of these corals. feeding the individual polyps would be impossible with my toadfish, unless the polyp is lightning fast when it takes its food.

i appreciate all these beautiful pics in this thread, awesome pics everyone, thanks for sharing!
