In my experience, Marine Snow made my Nitrate levels spike every time that I used it (it's dead Phyto after all).

Good luck.

bingo, you will find with most LPS that anything smaller than brine or mysis is not really going to have the feeding impact you want. most LPS would prefer silversides (small fish) over anything else. marine snow, DT's, and their ilk are really meant for sps and filter feeders. LPS like it meaty...

honestly i have never fed my LPS and they have done fine. i would stop for now. larger LPS will take silversides... otherwise do frozen brine or mysis shrimp.

In your previous post you stated that LPS love meaty foods and now you state you never feed yours. Which is it?

My experience is that it depends on the LPS type. Some are photosynthetic and some are not.

I think the best bet is to do some research and get a book on coral propagation. This way you will have an experts advice.

Regards,

Pat

LPS corals love to be fed but this does not mean they need it; after all why add phosphates/nitrates when you don't have to. Almost all of the lps corals you find in the trade will be photoautotrophic; one of the more popluar heterotrophs is the sun coral, which needs regular feeding.

Research is always the key to successfully keeping any coral in this hobby.

Thanks for the welcomes. I agree with your statement. There is a fine line that if you cross leads to trouble. I would think that most of the corals we are talking about in the natural habitat do not have someone chunking down raw fish every couple of days. I find that if I feed DT's or other foods too much algae gets hold. I then have to back off. It is good to feed the other critters in the tank. There is lots of life that needs to be feed not just the fish and corals.

By the way, someone mentioned Marine Snow, that product is pretty much useless. If you look at the ingredients you will see that it contains not much of anything. Save your money. DT's is a much better product and there are others out there as well.

Regards,

Pat

Pat,
If you feed LPS coral then you should feed them meaty food. it can be both ways. I don't feed, and my corals do great... even in the current crappy 20g holding tank they are in. yes they will eat but when you are keeping waste low in your tank it is better not to feed if they are doing fine with the light alone.

Most LPS corals are photosynthetic with non being the exception to the overall population. I have done plenty of study on LPS coral to give this advice... my tank is a good example of my knowledge.

I prefer to use freshly grown greenwater or brownwater over DT's because the fresh stuff is always alive and will be of more benifit without adding a bunch of phosphates to the tank... Again i remind you, i don't normally feed but when and if i do, that is how i do it.

Hmm. One thing no one has asked yet, are they touching/ close to each other or other corals? A lot of the time different species of corals will fight with each other when they are too close. Just a thought.

Erm, and for the experts... Will the corals fighting with each other bleach them, or just make them wither then die?
