What kind of SPS will a Coralife 150watt support

I have a 110 gallon with a "48" Aqualight Pro, 2x 150W HQI + 2x 96W Actinic + 3 Blue Moonlight LEDs" light setup.

I have had much success with star polyp propagation, leathers, mushrooms, clams, and xenia.

I am interested in trying my hand with SPS corals. Can I support them with this system. IF so, which should I try first? Also, what species should I avoid?

All help appreciated.

Thanks

Mitch

Mitch,

You will have issues with the octocorals and misc. other soft corals in your system, especially if they are well-established in a relatively small system. Their production of terpenes, etc. will stunt the growth if not kill your stony corals kept in the same tank, if not initially, then eventually as the stony coral gradually increases the production of mucus that allows the softies to recognize the stony coral presence in the tank. This is not to say that you won't be alble to raise stony corals in this system, just that you will have to maintain aggressive skimming and the use of GAC in the tank this occurs in and do frequent 10% to 20% water changes every week to two weeks. This mixed species husbandry will be more difficult if the tank is small.

The sufficiency of lighting will depend on how deep the tank is and what, if any substrate you have in the system. How deep is the tank, and what is your volume? Do you have sand? If so, how deep, and how deep will the corals be from the surface in your system, and what type of filtration do you have in the system? Keep in mind that the biotope for most of these corals is different from the environment for soft corals, so you may have issues with the flow in the tank for stony corals to do well in conflict with the slower current for most octocorals.

Looking forward to your replies.

that is a VERY deep tank if it is the same as the one that i use to keep FW fish in. i am guessing around 36" tall (maybe more). i would have to recommend at the very least 250w MH's, but I would probably go with 400w MH's to be safe.

I'd go with the 400!
