I actually saw this skimmer in action at the LFS, it works pretty well. I'd be kinda worried about the longevity of the pump personally.
Either way, I think you have enough light for SPS

No problem. How long have you had the tank set back up? I think I remember you saying that you were moving or something and had to take it down...
Anyway, i am going to bring several Monti frags to the meeting so if you would like a frag or two, come on the the meeting on the 24th.

I'd give it a bit longer before you start adding things to the tank... slow down this time

I'd give it about another month before you add anything to the tank coral wise.. just give it time to stabilize

I think your asking a lot of that skimmer on a 55 gallon system for SPS. I bet they will live and grow but I think your going to have coloration issues. Your better off than most having someone like tony in your club though.
Did you cook the rock or anything? If you cooked the rock then you are prolly ready to go with a few monti frags. If you went with a conventional cycle then you had better wait.

I recommended to him that he keeps a light bioload (just a couple small fish) until he can buy a better skimmer. He's only 17 so online purchases are hard to do

collin, I can set you up with a couple of frags as well. I have three frags of established colonies that I know will prosper under single reflector t5 for as long as you do not place them more than a foot below the surface.
As for light, I think you will have enough light to keep SPS, you just might not be able to keep them in the bottom to maybe mid-range area of the tank (monti caps might do well in the higher mid range). You might want to look at mixing the tank with other corals. Keep a nice ridge of SPS at the top of the rockwork with zoa and LPS closer to the bottom. It gives a nice layered effect.

Your lighting is sufficient. Thats plenty of light to grow your sps. We all want more. In my statistics class we did a write up on how much "more" people wanted in life. And it was a broad class of study.....but on average the everyday american regardless of income wants 15-20% more. Even people with millions. Those lights will suffice. Main worry should be your skimmer for now. Like tony said, low bioload and you will be fine.
