Sps Help!!
hey i woke up yesterday and saw this
as i mixed up some coral dip i saw my tomato clown ripping away the flesh making the problem spread quickly. I took the clown out and fragged the troubled peice of the coral about 4mm below the "sore" and dipped the whole colony..... now its spreading to surrounding braches and keeps moving.
Is there anything i can do to save it?? should i just frag the whole thing?(i would rather not) I dont know quite what to do, but it seems like if i wait, it might just get worse?!? Input please!!!!!
I did a water change about 1.5 weeks ago salinity, dkh and all the rest seem to be really stable and this colony, and everything else in the tank has been doing great for the last 3-4 months
here is a tank pic from two days ago
and one from yesterday to see where it started(front center of colony)
all polyps were fully extended and everything was goin fine before this
Thanks for any help.
Jason

That looks like RTN
I would frag a big peice of the coral, as far as you can away from the effected area, run some Carbon, and evaluate the ammount of flow the coral gets. Are the pylops always slightly moving? How much flow do you have in the tank?
How long have you had the coral? Has it growen in your tank? What's your lighting? Perams? Flow? All this could help us help you.

Whiskey

Need info as Whiskey said to try to figure out why. If you don't want to frag it yet, you can also try to cover the affected area with superglue. Cover out to some of the healthy tissue and see if it stopps the recession.
Again, we need info about lighting, flow, water parameters, how long the tank has been set up, have you had good growth and color on theis coral and how long have you had it?
Any temperature spikes or anything recently?

no temperature spikes really.... my tank consistantly goes from 73 to 77 during the day because of lights. I have 2x 175w 10k MH and two 48" actinic, i will check what brand if it matters. My flow is from 2x aquajet 1200's and my return pump... i can check when i get home. It has pretty good flow, and nothing directly on corals. The colony has had good growth in the 3-4 months ive had it, its probablly grown an 1.5" in the higher tips and little less throughout. I will post a coparison pic for growth as soon as i find it.
So if i was to superglue.... i would cut off the bad, dip again, than super glue? or is it nessesary to dip if im cutting and than glueing? i dont know if dipping again may be bad for the colony??
if things looks much worse when i get home, it seems like fraggin might be the best option
thanks

IMHO:
That temp swing is too much, you should try and keep it to a 1 or 2 deg swing.
The flow is not enough, My 50G softie tank has 2 MJ1200's, 2, 200GPH PH's and the return. You should shoot for 40X + in tank flow,... My 125G SPS tank uses 2 powerheads on a wavemaker that put out 3,100 GPH each plus the return!
What are your levels? CA?ALK? PH? Phosphate? Nitrate? What size tank? How old are those bulbs? How far off the water?
The fact you had growth in the begining is good, but I think you could use to up the flow for sure. If you want to keep it cheap you could use something like Seio 1500's.

In this case I would go with allelothapy over the other issues. Do you run activated carbon 24/7 ? You've got some serious chemical warfare going on in there.

i think it is to low . try to shoot for around 76 . the lower the temps the slower the growth . but i don't think that the temp is what has caused this to happen . how long have you had that perticular coral ?

from the way its peeling off the tissue like that it looks to me like its an ammonia or nitrite spike that did it in

I think you may be right, is that a sinularia on the left of the pic?
Looks as if it has shut down, if so , they release toxins normally, if not mistaken.

There doesn't look as if there is enough bioload(fish) to produce anything like that, just my opinion
