SPS bubble

What causes bubbles or blisters on SPS corals? I have one that has developed what looks like a large blister. Do I leave it alone? Pop it? Medicate it? It has been doing fine for about a year. The rest of the coral still looks great.

I had this problem as well, and nobody really seems to know. In my case recucing my feeding of "Coral" food made them dissapear.

Oh,.. I should add that I also made sure to get my Salinity stable, and my CA/Alk/Mag levels in ballance and stable. Ontop of this I did extra water changes.

Thanks Wiskey. I don't feed these corals. In fact, the only thing I feed in this tank is the LPS and they get pieces of shrimp or fish. No small particle foods at all. My salinity did go pretty high so maybe that's it. It's fixed now, so hopefully the blister will go away. The coral looks great everywhere but the blister.

I would like to see some scientific reference that salinity or temperature does it chilisreasy. I really would.

This topic has come up numerous times in reference to acropora and stylos alike, and I have yet to get any kind of real answer. I can tell you from experience it is nothing to be concerned about though.

do you have yoru sps in a high nutrient tank with the rest of your stuff..or is this a different system??

If it isnt......maybe you should feed more.

whats your alk maintained at?? what lighting do you have over this tank??

Just curious........maybe we can figure something out here

this is a new tank.. 6 months old..ive only fed plankton like..7 times...i dont feed much so i can keep the nutreints down to a low to 0 level..

feeding more would raise the nutrient level..its only a 30g

alk was perfect last time it was tested..sorry i dont have alk test kit right now so i cant give the parm..but i had it tested by 2 people & both said it was ''dead on''.

Lighting is Full natural day light..really strong.enough to tan your skin..along with a 150w 10k MH just 2 inches from the water.

corals are mixed..only 1 leather..cabbage leather..some people tell me its the xenia being in the same tank..but i know over 12 people that keep sps with xenia..& have for years.. high flow of 800gph..not counting filtration flow...i can customize it at the push of a button as well..so i can do almost anything with flow now..

You still need to feed, or at least feed your fish lots to keep sps happy. the difference vs the high nutrient tanks you are used to keeping for your non photo stuff is that you have to be able to get it out so the tank remains clean. otherwise this can cause pale and underfed corals. You already know this, but you need to get your own alk kit. food and alk levels and the combination of the two are the first reasons tht your corals will lighten up as you describe.

we actually talked about the feeding thing earlier today...

I dont hink you want to start feeding plankton every day....just either feed the fish you have now more or add some fish and feed them. fish poo. its whats for dinner.

if you dont have the tank set up in such a way to get the nutrients out, or have your husbandry habits set up so they pick up any slack that your equipment leaves...then yes........you are going to have nutrient issues.
