Red bug

I have a question .. I just read on another board that red bugs only attack acros .. is this correct? .. I have a Montipora that is slowly declining ... and tonight I noticed that there where little bugs running over the skeleton parts of the coral ... they are not red however .. they almost look like pods ... could they just be eating the dead flesh of the coral???

I did break off the dead parts of the coral and gave it a iodine dip this evening after the lights went out ... I hope its ok ..

use a tooth brush to scrape them off, but not in your display tank. do it in a seperate bucket. they usually hid under the monti.. also those nudi's cant stand high current.

those look like normal pods to me. Don't think their nudi's.

The pods might just be cleaning out the dead/dying areas.

no clue why it's not doing good though. Do you have other SPS's? Are they doing okay?

Where was this monti placed? lighting? flow?

what are your tank parms?

I have some Acro that is going great ... the Montipora is in pretty good flow up high ... the lighting is 2x 250w HQI`s ... 20K ... tank preams are all good ...

I broke off the dieing parts of the Monti ... bascally that branch that I took pics of .. I am 99% sure they are just pods eating the dieing flesh of the monti ... the rest of it looks dang good ... I will post some pics here in a minuet ...

From those pics, the damage looks very similar to Nudibranch damage. Look at the coral with a flashlight after lights have been out for a while. They are frilly white nudis, and can be hard to see, but if you know what nudibranchs look like you will be able to tell. Most of the damage is actually done by the larvae.
If it is the case, they will eventually kill the coral. Do you have any other Montipora in your tank?

If you don't see any, don't rule out the possibility of another problem, but I think this would be your best guess right now.

BTW red bugs only attack Acros.

ok I will take a look after the lights go out and see what I can find ...

There are 2 little antena that stick out of little holes in the montipora .. there are several of them.. would they have anything to do with it?

Most likely. no. It's pretty comon for them to have little critters living in them. I'll see if I can find a pic of a Nudibranch. They can also be on the rock where the coral is located.

Is that the only Montipora you have?

Actually, I was incorrect about my remark on the larvae. They hatch out at a fairly large size. No larval stage. Sorry about that.
