6" under the water directly under a 250 w bulb. I think I get the best color out of all of my encrusting montis high in the tank and with mass amouints of flow. There is a catch to this though......do it very SLOWLY. If you just put them there without moving them up slowly you can bleach and or stunt them and it will take many months to truly recover from it. Many of these encrusting montis will get faded out and or much less brilliant than their potential under insufficient lighting.
In fact.....wheres luvmylo?? I want to know if he listened to me and moved that little frag of sweetness he has up and if it helped give it more color like I thought it would. I hope so becasue if it did Im going to come collect my payment of a little sliver of that thing. If it didnt Im still probably going to come collect He has this little frag that has the potential to be sweeter than my sunset or rainbow.....

there are a few different "superman" monti's out there. but the one i had did well under my radium lights growing a lot in 3 months and keeping good coler either under the center brace or on the sand bed.
i think the article is the tyree le "true superman" btw.
but this is the one i normally see... more dense polyps

Nice looking frags Mike! I have mine in the bottom third of the tank and will leave it there until I have a good reason to move it. I have a tendency to move stuff too much and will try my best to resist this time.

I have my encrusting superman on a rod and string, hanging directly under the 250W 10K XM's about 2" under the water and about 10" from the bulb. The blue is really dark and the polyps deep red...
I will try to post a picture sometime this week.

I just got a frag of superman from Tyree at a convention this past weekend, he said there is another monti that looks very similar, almost identical but has smaller polyps, that does very well in high light but that the true superman monti does best in moderate

Update: the frag is starting to encrust and spread, but the color looks bleached out. An orange encrusting monti next to it still has good color and is growing faster. I'm gonna leave it where it is for now since it still has good PE and is encrusting. I think it's still too soon to make a decision about moving it up or down.

The PE on the superman has decreased so I have moved it down to the bottom of the tank. Hopefully, it will recover.
