there really is no arguments anymore about mh being better than t5 because it simply isnt... boils down to what is more important to you...efficiency or shimmer lines. nothing wrong with halide, its just not better except maybe on very tall tanks(arguably). either mh or t5 can achieve the same results.
and yea you would roast the highest light demanding corals with 2 400w halides over a 75... unless maybe if you wanted to hang them 2ft+ above the waterline and thus defeating the purpose of the higher wattage.

Our LFS has them over their tanks and on other websites a guy has a 400W over a 20L tank... SPS corals can sustain just about any wattage (realistically speaking) all it takes is adjustment, the higher the wattage the better the colors

ok Brandon, whatever you think bud... but this is a thread for T5, so if you want to debate it, and get opinions from people who are far more advanced Aquarists than you, post a thread in the General Discussion forum, asking about 800 watt MH over a 75 gal tank, and see what responses your are going to get...

Both statements are misleading. Although there may be some truth to them, in general, both statements are not correct. The amount of light that a captive coral can handle is dependent on many factors. The same is true for the colors that they develop. I also agree that in practical terms, 400 watt halides over a 75 gallon tank is a poor choice.
In any case, let's not get too off topic here....

"I have been running 400W 10,000K Reeflux bulbs using a PFO HQI ballast for 5 years over my two cube tanks and it is 16" to the sand with the lights mounted 9" off the water surface. For some corals it is too much light but for others it is required to keep the colors I want.
When I say too much light for some corals I mean they are not the colors I'm trying to achieve. SPS corals are quite adaptive and on average darken under low light and lighten when the light is increased. It can take more than six months for corals to adapt to changes in light intensity although the average time is two to four weeks." Quoted from Kevin Pockell
Never intended to make a debate...I just said that if I got another system I'd probably just put 2x400W MH and it blew up from there

ummm what is going on??
I love those pics of t-5's Like I said those pics are beautiful.
It has been about 6 weeks and I still have my starter corals alive.
I gues I can explore more expensive corals now. At least I know that my tank can sustain them.
Thanks every one
Um since I started this thread i have already asked nicely not to make this a debate,
I am asking agian joker please stay on subject this thread has nothing to do with metal halides and it doesnt need to be mentioned agin in this thread.
If so Then I ask the MODERATORS to please remove this entire thread. I like TRT because it is a purely informative site and wish it to stay that way. Debates are useful if you are Obama and Clinton. I just want advice

Lets keep on topic guys, all that was asked for is to see T5 lit tanks; which I would like to see more of also.
If you want to debate T5 vs MH or if 400w is too much for a 20" tank then you can start your own thread or keep it in PMs.

ok this has nothing to do with reeftanks but in the body shop that i co-own we replaced the lights just yesturday we switched from industrial mh lights to t5 lights (4 bulbs industrial fixtures with individual reflectors) and its so much brighter befor it was dull and every thing cast a shadow and now nothing cast a shadow theres light every where
so i think t5 are more than capable of keeping sps with nice color(as most of the tanks above shows that)
