I would say about 10-12 hours for actinics and 8-10 hours for the halides is a good starting point. Adjust as needed.

my halides stay on for 8 hours a day and actinics for 12. a photosynthetic coral does most of its feeding from the light in the first 5-6 hours that the lights are on. the rest is for pleasing the tank owners eyes, so it is completely up to you on that aspect. hth

8 hrs a day for me, and I do not use actinic for fluorescent supplementation currently, but do some times (see below). I have done 10 to 12 hrs, but I cut the light off for 2 hrs in the middle of the day when doing this.

Spanks had a test they were doing with multiple on-off light periods during the day, don't know how this turned out, but I personally have heavy coral growth, only problem is that it is hard on MH bulbs. I use VHO's during the off MH perios and cut them on about 2 hrs before and 2 hrs after the MH's total photoperiod.

I run my halides 11 hours a day, the URI Super Actinic VHO's 13 hours. The VHOs come on 1 hour earlier and shut one hour later....they serve as dusk to dawn also. I aslo run a halide over my fuge on a reverse photoperiod.
