Question

First SPS question

Hi,

My tank is about 2 years old now so I think I'm finally ready to try SPS. I got a neon green Hydnophora today and have a few questions.

Do I need to worry about red bugs or any other pests with this coral?

I'm guessing I need to put it higher up in the tank in a lot of flow?

OK, I probably lied - this isn't my first SPS, I also have a maze brain. Do either of them eat or are they strictly photosynthetic? I never see any polyps out on the maze. Should I just feed the tank phytoplankton after lights out or do something else?

TIA

You don't need to feed either of those, just make sure they get adequate light. Also note the hydno will kill just about any other coral that touches it.

The brain isnt a sps....its a lps.........

If the maze is happy.....it should always have its sweepers out...even of you only see the very tips of them....then at night, or even sometimes when it feels threatened by something closeby........they can reach out as much as a foot. It very well might have tentacles out........but during the day they arent all that noticable

Do take note of what Nyles said about the dangers of that Hydno, it is one of the more harmful(to other corals) corals you can keep.

Neither one needs fed directly......but being as you say you dont ever see any sweepers........i would try to catch it in the midle of the night and try to stimulate it with some blender mush or something

Thanks - I could have sworn that I read someplace that a maze brain is an SPS. Oh well. Ummmm, Monti Cap - that's my other SPS

I read up on the Hydno some before I got it and was aware that it packs a potent sting. However, I re-did my flow some and had to move a frogspawn because it was getting whipped around. I wanted something that could take the flow and I didn't want to worry about red bugs.

(I moved the brain up higher yesterday and looked at it this morning with the lights off. There were a number of sweepers out - from 2 - 8 inches long.)
