Black bugs on montis?

So a few months ago I was taking pics of some of my stuff and found in a pic I took with a macro lens that a purple cap that had never really taken off in my tank had little black dots the size of pin heads on it (pic below). From there I searched and found a couple posts here and there that said there were small black bugs that seemed to like montis.

I inspected my other montis and moved a few digis to the front of my tank so I could keep an eye on them. I dipped the purple cap in TMPCC and used a baster to blow the little black bugs off. Several weeks later I *think* I see them on two digis.

Last night I looked around and searched for several hours and not one post I read seemed to have any real suggestions on what they were, nor how to get rid of them. There were a few suggestions about interceptor, but nearly every time it was suggested some one else would pop in and say that it didn't work for them. A few other suggestions were made, but most said that the coral nearly died or did die.

There corals have been in my tank for 8 months to a year and these three that seem affected have never really grown. I do have a green and red cap that are like weeds and I don't see any on them at all. So I do think they are coral specific on what they chose to inhabit. None of the affected corals are *covered* in these things, there are just a few here and there.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I was planning on taking out the three affected corals, purple cap, yellow digi and a red digi (all from the same supplier) and do another TMPCC dip today.

Send Tom a PM and see what he thinks... he may ask you to capture one and send it to him for study under the microscope.

LOL... yep.. he is always looking for new specimens

I don't see why the Interceptor would not work. Dose size it 1/4 tablet for 100 gallons.

Well someone on another board swears he/she had them and a single dose of interceptor took care of them... I may have to research this further.

I've heard interceptor works on black bugs. I will not be held responsible for such a claim, though.

Hoang had black bugs at one point (on his Acros) and Interceptor worked for him.

you could try a halichoeres wrasse. they are known to eat monti-eating nudis, which is clearly not what you have, but you never know - they might eat what you do have, too... we keep christmas, chrysus, melanurus, and radiants in our montipora holding tanks as a safety measure.

also, you may want to try a dip in coral rx: http://coralrx.com/coralstore/index....mart&Itemid=26

we have found it to be much more effective than tmpcc.

good luck!

I have a clown mystery wrasse. Not sure if he/she eats nudis (coolest colored fish in my tank).

I did a TMPCC dip last night on these three corals. I think I knocked about 30 of these little guys into the next realm. It's hard to tell because they are so small that all little black things that fall off look like them.

I'll look into the interceptor in the next few weeks while I monitor this problem further. Thanks for the info Benny.
