I've personally found that it's not so much the heater(with exceptions) as it is how you use them. Meaning that I feel a controller is a must with a reef. Whether that be a stand alone unit or on a controller. I use 4 300 watt heaters tied into my Neptune. Two are in the sump and kick on at 78.1 and I have two in the overflow that kick on at 77.9 just in case... But rarely does the second set kick on.
So to support what skeety mentioned, a couple 100 watters would be great, but I would say that a controller is a must... Heaters fail and they normally fail in the on posistion. A controller will *nearly* eliminate this risk.
