That is a good point. I wonder what Bill is going to do about the evap, Lighting, and all the other things that come along with this great hobby.

What kind of lights are you going to need to penetrate that much water?

several 1000watt halides. And if I am not mistaken I think Spazz mentioned before on the other site there is a glass roof being installed. (i think)

He can set up a couple of plastic shrouded belt driven air lifts to help push the moist air out without rusting out the fan assembly.

Very interesting project, I am hoping to build a large tank down the road. My plans were more of a in-ground pool type setup. I live outside of Chicago and was wondering where he found and architect to design the tank and house to withstand the load of all of the water. Do you think Bill would be willing to let a simple design (drawing) to be published? Sure would like to meet him and see this when it's done. His contacts for all of the materials and what's used would sure save countless hours of research need to put all of this together.

Has Bill ever considered putting some underwater camera systems in the tank so he can share it with all of us live. It's really pretty simple. I have cameras on my 300 so I can check it out from anywhere in the world !!

sorry carman that got changed. there is a bedroom above the fish tank now so there wont be a sky light.
i think bill plans to have some 1000w halides here and there and then use 400w halides around them. the entire tank wont have lights over it. the reason for that is he wants dark caves for the fish to hide in and maybe even have some carnation corals in the caves. not for sure though.

i know alot of people have been asking about the surge tank. it will be the 2000g cone bottom tank that bill is standing in front of. im not sure what size pump he plans to use to run the surge device but the output will be a multi valved manifold surge device. im not sure if it will fire on a random pattern or if it will be semi random. there will be 6 air operated butterfly valves to start with. if needed he already has the pipes through the bottom of the tank for more valves. each valve will fire for about 15 seconds. they will all be run off his high teck computer for the tank. i cant rembe the name of the computer but its not your average reef tank computer. its alot more high tech. the tank will vary in the amount of water it has in it through out the day. i think bill plans to turn off some of the surge valves during low tide times. that waythe fish can relax for a time bofore they get pushed around again by the 3" blast of water comming through the pipe. its going to be a truelly awesome sure device. i have never seen a more simple surge system for a tank this size. the controller will send a signal to a variable delay relay. its a relay that delays the opening of the contacts from 1 sec ot 60 seconds. so all the computer has to do is send a 1 second burst of electricty to the relay and it will open the valve. then the relay is kept open by its own timer with in the relay. there very simple devices and can be gotten almost anywhere. once the timere is up it will release the contacts and the valve will close. each relay controls a valve. so the computer just needs to send a burst of electricity to the relay for just long enough for the contacts to touch. then its all run b its self. you can change the relays how ever you want based on where they are in the tank. some areas you dont what to blast for too long or you will push rocks and corals aruund in the tank.

Spazz, thank you so much for moving this thread rather than just giving up when the "other side" gave you a tough time. Builds like this are rare, and it is even rarer for them to be published. Thank you for providing a great service to the reefing community.

I hope to poke around this forum more often. I bet TRT gets 1000 new members just from this thread

I know you mentioned that the tank is on hold right now due to weather. If your schedule frees up, would you mind posting a few more pics and info about the monster skimmers (both for this tank and some of the ones you have built in the past).

I also enjoyed seeing the pictures of his current tank and tank room. They seem to speak volumes about the way he approaches building tanks, plus who doesn't want to see a 1500 gallon display. If you want to keep this thread solely focused on the new tank, I understand as well.

Only 999 more new members to go! I'll be completly honest. I joint this sight just so i could could put my $.02 in on this thread. And probably ask a whole lot of questions.

I followed this thread from day1 on RC. But never joined RC. Just didn't want to. Spazz, thanks for keeping us all updated on this awsome build. I love to see your DIY builds. And Bill, what can i say. You ROCK. Truly awsome concept, and to see it actually come to life. Amazing.

Thank you all for sharing.

Ya, with all the ice and power outages in that part of the country I have a question.

What kind/size generator will he be putting on this house? Since he travels/is busy a lot, I assume it will be auto starting and all that?

i know he has a large generator set picked out but i dont have any info on it yet. i have spent the last week and a half trying to contact bill. he is just so busy he dont have time to give me updates. so i have to plan a trip in his direction so i can get some update pics and info. i have a trip sceduled for next month so i will try and stop in there and get some updated information.
