Most of the finishing work is done and there's paint on the walls and furniture back in the room!

Notice there's water in there too!

Ok, how about a look see at the sump?

Here's the design, it's a classic settling tank style sump designed to catch detritus and not recycle it back into the tank:

I got the sump built to my specs at Fish and Other Icthy Stuff in Oldsmar, FL. I'm very impressed with the quality, and just as important to me it was built perfectly to my specs.

In place under the stand. The doors on the end of the stand allow me to remove the sump easily if I ever need too.

I assume that you don't have the sump on anything, so you worry about a small overflow running on your floor?

Looks great

Talking

Well it's true. If I tried something like that I'd either blow up half my town, burn my house down or get hauled off to the nutt house.

The sump is on the floor. A small overflow would NEVER happen.

Yeah, a good DIY'er schedules the trip to the nut house into the plan.

Here was something I missed in the design. I didn't think about the fact that you'd be able to see the wall framing through the tank. Easily enough solved with a piece of 1/8" black acrylic on the outside of the tank.

Finally got the Iwaki 100 in. Now I can start plumbing!

This is how I installed the skimmer. We'll get to the real pictures of that a little later...

Ok, now on to the plumbing. Keep in mind that a lot of this was changed as the project progressed. This plumbing was mostly a test run to see how my design was going to pan out. Some things have changed quite a bit, some are exactly the same.

I decided not to drill the sump even though it would be easy enough to do. Instead, I dropped a 2" 'hook' over the top to feed the pump. The 1" plumbing goes through a 1.5" wye which splits the flow to either side of the tank.

These returns are now running the length of the tank and shooting back towards the overflow instead of how they are pictured here.

Here are the 2" drain pipes. You can see that I have the other two holes plugged at this point. I'm now using one more of the holes, but we'll get to that later. I chose the rubber hose clamp unions instead of the fancy ones because there isn't much room in there. They work fine. I do butt the pipes right against each other in the union so that there is minimal water contact with the rubber. I will probably replace them now that I'm fairly certain I'm not going to change my design any more.
