How often do you build your dream tank?
Maybe I am just really obsessed but i build my dream tanks(s) in my head all the time. Right down to the plumbing and parts!
Right now my current fantasy tank is horse shoe shaped, 30 inches tall (I know hard to clean), 4 feet deep and 8 feet on each side. One side is a deep water type setup with little rock and lots of open sand for maybe a small blue dot ray and some open water fish like look down. The middle section is a transistion from the open water look to a reef. It has increasing amounts of rock and stronger light. The last side is a full blown reef. Higher flow and stronger light. The sections, or at least the reef would be seperated from the other areas by a panel that has fairly large holes in it for circulation while providing preotection for the reef dwellers form the larger aggresic munchers. Allthough one system, each leg would have its own overflows, skimmer, CLS's and specifically designed flow. Along with flow designed to move water between the areas. The reef side would have a huge surge device also.
Now how about the rest of you? lets say money is no object, what would you do? Doesnt have to be a reef.

I agree Robert I do stuff like that all the time My dream system would be 2 tanks a FOWLR that is the same size as the reef, both tanks would be 72"X48"X30" I would love to do the 2 seperate tanks b/c There are sooooo many fish I would love to have but are not reef safe

who me, the DIY master, nay, i never come up with new and funky ideas for reef systems.
if you are looking for some really cool and off the wall ideas, let me know i can let them fly. the only think keeping me back is that silly M word. plus the fact that i can only fit so many tanks in the house and still have it liveable by the family.

Well, lets hear those ideas! With all the time we spend on this stuff I'm sure there are some really cool ideas around here.
For me, and it relates to the tank described above, I want to have different types of environments in one. Deep water and a reef. Of course in a closed system its not practical do to predation and such. That's why my dream tank has a "ventilated" divider.
Start throwing out those ideas, money is no object (if only!), nor is space, electricity and any other real world obstacle! But, for arguments sake, lets keep it to something that could be housed in a home large home, but a home. I really do plan on doing something like I mentioned above someday so I kinda want to pic everyones brain! Lets even talk about what you would do with sumps etc.
Let em rip!!

As I sit and read about the dream Tank the cooles thing that I could think of is a 8 - 10 foot round tank that has a sprial stair case around it flowing from the bottom of the first floor of the entrance of my house to the top of the second floor where a balcony goes all the way around.
Not to sure how you would clean such a thing. (scuba tank I guess).

Ooooooohh yeeeeeeeeeah!
That's what I'm talking about! There's a picture i saw somewhere (long time ago for my memory) Of a guy doing just that with a snorkel...... Cleaning his tank. Big in wall, maybe 8'x8' viewing panel. Boy, that would sure mess with the skimmer !
I would have to build a big old slab and put a big old building on it for the tank! Nicely accommodated I might add !

I am always building... IMO if your gonna make the tank too big to clean easily... make it big enough to swim in

Jenn M gave me a picture one time of her friend in their 1,000 gallon system trying to clean it while the fish swam around the guy.

The tank I'd love to design and build would be like those petting pools with the stingrays they have at aquariums.... Do an 8 ft x4 ft x4ft with Plexi viewing panels, mortar walls with pond liner. That's almost 1000 gallons... and it be alot cheaper than a glass tank....

A petting tank would be cool! You could make able to be changed over to run deeper if you wanted so you could do other things to if you wanted to at some time! At one end have an adjustable "baffle" to do it and the water would spill over into another tank so you could have a reef too!

I florida everything (all first floors) are built on slabs (unless the house is really old.) so that is not a problem down here. But to have to love a two story tank with a spiral staircase around it.
