Big Bad 300g Shelf reef

I figure i can enter this since i really have not gotten started yet.

i plan on doing a 300 gallon with a single pillar in the back with LPS corals. the rest will be free swimming fish and maybe a shark if i can find the right one.

My intentions re to do a very short imitation of the shelf where a reef goes into deep water with corals growing out of a verticle wall. I am taking a minimalistic approach to the aquascape and overall setup

BB tank
bullet 3 skimmer
sequence barracuda for the CLS
2 X 250 w MH light

the aquascape will consist of a single LR pillar in the center of the tank against the back. the pillar will be made by taking a single acrylic rod and glueing it to a thick acrylic plate. I will them use epoxy to build a series of LR disks that will have a center hole that slides over the post. the disks will remain seperated to allow me to move the coral easily in the future. the cls will use locline fittings pointed in random areas to create random flow. the 1.5" return on the CLS will be for a spray bar at the bottom of the tank to keep the poo moving.

i have not decided on a return pump yet.

the lighting will be 2 250w MH pointed at an angle to focus on the pillar where i will attach different corals (mainly LPS). with the tank as BB i should get plenty of light penetration into the deep parts to accomidate all the corals.

for fish i have yet to make a decision but the overall feel of the tank is to be open and allow for plenty of free movement. if i don't find the right shark (dogfish) then i will do tangs and free swimming fish.

see the attached pictures for a general idea on the setup.

I just saw a post in PNWMAS for a dual 400w ballast for sale. It may push the limits of your circuit breaker though. It would probably be better to have 4 250's than 2 400's.

not needed... look closely at the design... the coral will all be on the center pillar.

I have two 250 watt bare ballasts I will sell for cheap. I might even be able to dig up some sockets.

I keep sharks in my tanks and love them! So you're looking for a dogfish shark? what are the dimensions to your tank? also what is the avg. temp you plan on keeping it at? As far as sharks go I might be able to find that one.
