400 Gallon Hurricane Katrina Rebuild

I was planning our new tank the moment we picked our house. However the tank was not on the immediate tasks. While our walls were open we ran all of our plumbing.
Waste Water Drain
Top-Off Water (Fresh)
Salt Water Change
Chiller Lines (Although I have not used it yet) I have it plumbed but it is for Emergency power outages. For when we loose AC)
We also ran 3 20Amp. circuits specifically for the tank.

I did all of the rough frame work for the tank area. Then it sat this way for 6 months while we were making the rest of the house livable.

The frame work was constructed of engineered 12" beams 5 running the length of the tank. The outter beams were doubled up and a single beam runs down the center.

These beams tie into two 6x6 columns on the kitchen side of the tank.

A sheet of 3/4 inch plywood was placed over the beams to make the tanks platform. I then put a layer of closed cell 3/8" rubber sheeting over the plywood to finish off the deck.

The tank was ordered a little premature is sat in the foyer for 4 months waiting for all the prep work to be completed.

During this time our Fish Room / Laundry Room was completed

Here is a 70 gallon rubermaid tub completly filled with the sand for the tank. Over 600 pounds. I had a 2 inch water space at the bottom of the tub with a suction manifold where a mag 18 drew water from and discharged it up top. This kept good water circulation throught the sand and kept it from turning black.

This tub is attached to a small 25 gallon sump with a skimmer and some mechanical / chemical filtration.

Now that my tank is up and running this is my frag tank. On the top shelf is my quaratine tank for fish.

When it was time to move the tank into it's spot. It took a crew of about ten. The walls of the tank are 7/8" glass and the bottom is 1 1/4" glass the tanks frame is stainless steel.

Total weight just 1360 pounds.

Next was to trim out the tank. This was fairly time consuming, and alot of trips to the local hardware store for moldings.

Great job of documenting the steps you went through to build it. It's a very good thing you were able to find that many people to help you move the tank into position.

Once all the trim work was complete the next task was to paint. I used a sprayable coating called Mutli Spec. It is carried by Sherwin Williams. Because the tank is viewed from three rooms we had to mask off nearly the entire house.

It reminded me of the scene from ET.

Man, I bet the tape and tarps cost more than the paint! What a chore, but it turned out wonderfly.
