Will this work?
Ok, I'm working on putting together the sump for my tank. My tank is a 37G tank and I'm using a 10G tank as the sump. I have the sump all setup with dividers and a bubble trap and an area for the refuge. I want to setup a manifold for the return from the sump. I will using a Mag Drive 9.5 for the return, the manifold will be 1/2" PVC with 4 to 6 outputs. The overflow is a 1" bulkhead, flowing into a sectioned off area and then flowing into the refuge and skimmer and then threw the bubble trap and into the return pump. My questions are:
1) is the 1" overflow going to be enough to handle this size of pump (will probably be about 700GPH)?
2) is this going to be to much flow for the tank or not enough (I can always get more flow by capping off a couple of outputs on the manifold)?
What do you think? I can always go with an 1 1/2" overflow if needed, I have not drilled the tank yet.
Thank you,
Rich

there is a calculator for what overflows can handle on the front page of reef central, I think a 1" overflow can handle that amount of flow.
I also dont think that will be too much flow at all for your tank, thats not really much flow at all in the grand scheme.
just my opinions, hope that helps

Go with the 1.5" drain, better to be a little big than a little small. R2

Dang, I totally forgot about that on Reef Central. Yeah I didn't think it sounded like to much either. I'm hoping that I can eliminate my powerheads with this setup.

Ryan, My only problem with the 1 1/2 overflow is that I do not have a glass drill bit that will fit the required hole size. I guess if needed I could do 2 1" overflows.

if you are drilling, i would get a second pump and use the opportunity to set up a closed loop which you will be happier with in the long run i think. you can get a used mag 5 and have that be your return pump (the less flowing through the sump the better in terms of micro bubbles in the tank) and then use the mag 9.5 as a closed loop.
as mike can attest, a 9.5 really doesnt pump a lot once it is plumbed in, i wouldnt be at all concerned about sending the entire flow through the cl system.

You can get those diamond burrs from Harbor Frieght for about $6 for 20pcs to make that hole. Won't take more than 5 mins. Just a little tip, put a little silicone in the hole of the BH just to be safe, not much and it''ll come off when you need it to.
As Krux suggested - two pumps one for the CL on a SCWD that HOB one that Melve has and a smaller one for the return. You'll need one of those overflow boxes for the inside to surface skim
happy reefing

Ok, I'll have to think about it. I would really like to keep it down to 1 return system though. My tank is mainly softies so I don't really need a ton of flow, my only cirulation now is the 2 maxi-jet 900's. The new tank that I'm design will definatly have a CL system.
So, does the 1" overflow sound ok or is it not enough? I didn't really find the info on Reef Central that I was looking for.

The 1" will be ok, since it's softies not too much flow is needed and those 2 Ph's will do the trick.

Cool, now the fun part of drilling through a glass tank.
