which salt???

I need to buy a new bucket of salt and just thought I would ask what salt most people are using and why you like it or don't like it. I have been using Oceanic but am wondering if there is something that people like more... and since I will be setting up the new tank with this new bucket just want to do it right.

Thanks,
Jenni

I stick with IO, been around for ages, proven itself, is cheaper than most of the others, and is used by a number of the folks with "famous tanks" and those scientists like Randy Holmes.

Ive used a lot of the salts, and for some reason ive had the best luck with oceanic, probably because of the high ca and mg levels. I noticed a huge increase in size with my corals. I have heard a few horror stories about this salt also. I think the more you use it the higher your levels will start to rise. I used the red sea stuff, and then got a 25g pack of oceanic, and everything looked a lot healther. I dont have any long term use of it, so i dont know how it will do, but id guess that your ca and mg will hit an all time high after a few water changes.
so what ive been doing is using the coralife salt, and then a little oceanic every 3rd water change to boost my levels. Im not sure if this goes against any fish rules but its working for me. You get corals like this.

I don't think there is a best salt ... I've used a variety and each seems to have its pluses and minuses - however, when someone runs a good sale on a 200 gallon bucket of salt thats my next buy. Currently using Oceanic but the buckets running low ... anyone know who's running a good sale on salt?

I would Highly avoid Woodys salt... Crystal Seas has cause huge Massive bleaching events... Check on RC for Crystal Seas.. There is a 2000 reply post reguarding the poor quality salt...

I used Oceanic without issues... I am now using Oceanpure made by Taam... I think Travis at upscales can Order for People.. Might want to Check with him... Its rather cheap salt and seems to be good so far... It has a lot more consistent levels than Oceanic did and a bit more reasonable with the Mg... My last bucket tested at like 1380-1400 for Mg... And its cheap salt... If your going to Cali you can get it for 20.00 bucket pickup from Customaquatic.com However I would guess it can be had locally for about 40ish bucket...

There are a couple others using it locally and maybe they will chime in as well..

James

Oceanic here. I like it because i can just dose the alk that i need and calcium always stays high. I have read the algae threads about oceanic, but the worse i have had in my tank is diatoms on the glass, and those wipe off easy.

I'm having issues with the search enging on RC as well. I'm using Woody's premix and haven't had any problems besides a little red algae when I first set up my tank. My hitch hiker snails seem to be keeping that at bay.

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...hreadid=549872

here are 2 just for starters with the Main thread being the top one and the next thread being a recent one... Didnt read the recent one though.. Not bad that I can manually search for the thread and find it lol... I used it a box of it (200g mix) without any Ill effects that I knew of at the time but when I tested the Magnesium levels it was extremely low around 800-900ppm Forget that... IO was about the same and I didnt like kent because of the higher than normal Alk levels.. Oceanpure seems to be exactly wha tI am looking for... Oceanic I would still Use without any hesitation...
