I read most of the threads on RC last night about crystal sea and it seems that most of the problems were when people switched from IO to crystal sea...most did pretty big water changes, not all, but some and that is where the problem came I think. Some people who started their tanks with it, swear by it and have had no problems with it.

Yeah.. jenn most of the threads were from people changing out too much water at one time from the Crystal seas.. Like I said I never had a problem with it.. I switched from IO at that time as well... I did notice that the Magnesium levels were Extremely low which affects the overall balance... That is the reason IMO that CS salt is so cheap... Mg is the most expensive supplement in the salt mix which is also IMO the reason why most salts have Deficiencies in Mg...

i have tested just about every salt out there and I have found the only 2 that I have seemed to like enough to stick with is Oceanpure and Oceanic.. Both to me are very Superior salts.. .

But with that Aspect if you run a poll on RC you will see about 40% use IO 40% use Oceanic and the other 20% use the other Misc salts... According to the Recent polls... AS to which salt is the best It will never be able to be told... All salts change a little from batch to batch... Its all about finding the salt you like and sticking with it... Stability is the Key..

James

I got mine Directly from the Mfg as a Sample bucket... I know that customaquatic.com has them listed but s/h is a PITA and Expensive... The price on the 200g box is 25.99 and the 150g bucket is 19.99 from them... I would check with Travis at upscales as he mentioned to me a while back that he could get it for me... IMO unless you need the buckets they are kinda a PITA to open.. Either way inside the bucket is 3x 50g mix bags and the box is 4x50g mix bags.. I like the salt overall so far...

I've used many salts before and had good luck with Oceanic and OceanPure. I did start with IO and have used Kent and Red Sea with good results, but like the way Oceanic and OceanPure quickly dissolves. I am currently switching out my Oceanic for OceanPure due to less salt dust when I pour the salt into my bucket.

I have also used Crystal Sea Mix with bad result. Had a red algae outbreak 24 hours have a 30g water change. Coinsidence? Maybe, but after switching back to IO with a 60g water change, the red algae disappeared and never came back. So guess what my conclusion is.

We were hot on the Oceanic and had great luck with it in our reefs, but... we began to see an odd brown hair algae growing in fish only tanks, were getting some reports of same from customers, and read some questionable reports on RC of the same type of algae growing in mixing buckets of Oceanic. I was sad to find this problem as I had nothing but good luck in the reef(and it was cheap and easy to disolve) We have switched back to the Kent Marine we were using before the Oceanic. I want to say that I never had any problems with the Oceanic in the reef tanks and, if not for these other possible issues, would still be using it. R2

I fell for the hype and just started useing marine mix bio-sea

Ive read three different studies where it has done well above the rest people always shoot holes in these studies but with the lack of any other proof ....

the famous s-15 report

this one was interesting . trys to show how toxic some salts are.
http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-03/rs/feature/

sadly i cant seem to find the third study where it did better than almost all of them . sure someone can chime in.

I think there are two salts called marine mix . one from crystal seas and one from aquacraft. the one from aquacraft is called bio-sea marine mix and the one is from crystal seas called just marine mix .

Im pretty sure that when people speek of marine mix they are generally referring do the biosea one from auqacraft. I could be wrong about this though . was just kinda my assumption.

can buy it here http://www.aquacraft.net/s9914.html
if you get a group order they will discount it for ya or you can call them and see if anyone sells it in your area.

this is what aquacraft has to say about a competitors product based on a set of tests that aqua craft paid to be done so take it for what they are worth. could be factual or could be heavily biased to them because they paid to have it done. There are two other studies that i have seen where it did very well though. one is listed above. So i guess with lack of any other proof on any other salt because no other company wishes to pay to have their own salts tested against the others like this , I guess I am going to make the decision to believe them.

I do think that the salt that Sea Monkey is referring to is a different salt than Crystal Sea. all the names are very similiar, so it is confusing, but I don't think they are the same salt
