Snorkeling pics from Maui - lots of pics dialup beware

Finally got my pictures! They didn't turn out as good as i hoped, but i still have another role to develop. I used a cheapo underwater disposable so the best pics are upclose. But its still neat to see the natural reef! Most of these are from Honaloa Bay, a few are off the coast of Lanai'i and all of the other role are from Lanai'i as well. So here we go

Morish Idol

Some of the corals

A large eel swiming around. He was about 3 feet long

More corals

Large school of fish

What type of butterfly (if it is a butterfly) is that? Second set, second picture down.

Here is where we went first off of Lanai'i

The reef here was much more spectacular

School looking for food

Lots of yellow tangs!

These stars eat coral so their number must be monitored

More to come later in the week!

It looks like a cornet fish on the long silvery one.

awesome pictures man. Too bad you didn't get a better camera to bring out the color of the reef more.

Did you bring back any goodies?

I remember catching those triggers back when I was in Hawaii. Those christmas wrasse are very easy to catch as well.

Not a cornet.....Needlefish! They're all over Honoloa Bay.

Did you dive to the right hand side of the bay near the points. Its a bit deeper but the coral colonies had more color and more of them. Most pocillopora, stylophora, and sme encrusting Monti (i think?).

Needlefishes have a forked tail. From the picture, it doesn't look like a forked tail, but a whiplike tail. If it flexes from side to side when it swims, it is a cornetfish.

Yah it had a whiplike tail. Real neat fish, had some nice colors when the light hit it right.

I hear ya! I did more diving and closer pics in the second role....i think. There was more pressure than i had imagined once you get about 8 ft down. It bothered my ears a bit, but off of Lanai'i i was able to get my ears plugged and dive deeper. These are my first pics underwater ever. Heck, this was the first time i've ever swam in the ocean!

I thought about it, but when you consider the cost of getting there, then the cost of things to do, i figured the throw away would do ok. If i get a bit more hooked on it then i will get a better one for sure.

I didn't bring back anything alive, but did get a lot of souvenirs. Brought back about 5lbs of Maui coffee
