I hate to say this... but if you go to the pet smart website and print the IO page then take it in to the store you can get it real cheap.

32 Bucks for a bucket of IO is a great price! Do you just need to print the page that shows the price and Pet Smart will give you that price?

Do they usually carry the buckets? From what I remember they only have the small bags.

I did, the store on Walker has a couple buckets. The one here by where I work in Milwaukie is out. Both stores confirmed taking a printout of the price in will get you the online price.

There is also a huge internet discount on Oceanic salt which I have been using with good success.

So I did the Petsmart deal. Regular price $47, with internet discount $31.99. Great price for good salt. And close to my house. One hassle is the store manager has to come all the way from his high tower office to approve it while everyone and their dog (literally) waits in line behind you.

How is it that a salt that is very low in Ca and Mg....and has a notoriously bad record of having dangerous alk spikes that vary from batch to batch...is a good salt ? for fish only maybe....but, not a reef. At best, it has to be augmented to bring it up to reef levels of Mg and Ca....and at worst, it will have a huge (over 16dkh) alk spike. Please check each new batch's alk before using.....many that didn't...now do.

Hmm, I just read an article a few weeks ago R2 had in his store comparing all synthetic Salts and it had rated IO one of the highest. What salt would you recommend? My last bucket was Oceanpure but I have used IO in the past.

I don't know what experience you may have had steve but i have been using IO from the start without any issues at all. never had a Mag or alk issue from it. IO is one of the oldest salt makers in the industry with a pretty good rep... there has been 2 studies done comparing the salts, the first one was biased IMO and the second blind study actually rated it pretty high. if it was a bad batch or two then i don't see the problem as everyone can have a bad batch... just MHO

Just curious, I'm assuming your running a Calc reactor? Do you Kalk or supp Ca or Mg in any way?
