RO/DI question

I just picked up an RO/DI unit from TheIceberg on PNWMAS.org the other day. It is a four stage and I never used one before. I'm just wondering if the good water is supposed to trickle out while the bad is coming out at full speed? It seems like I'm using about thirty gallons of bad to one gallon of RO/DI water. At this rate I will probably go through about four hundred gallons of water before I fill my forty gallon tank. Any suggestions?

Oh and one more question. Would restricting the bad water output help out or would it just force it back through the filter and cause a problem? Thanks in advance.

The good water trickles out and the bad comes out fast.

Yea that sounds about right especially on a new one. The warmer it is outside the better. Wait until the winter time when it gets real cold. Even worse. The only time I get the actual GPD is when it is like 90 out. Some say to get a pump for it and that helps too.

Yea it bugs me too sometimes but you could always save it for water plants or something like that

You can collect the bad water and use it in your washing machine, watering flower beds, anything like that.

Yeah I've been running it out to the lawn to water it. I think I might start storing it and selling it as mineral water. Anyone interested in some fine bottled water from Camas? Thanks for the input guys.

I use my bad water to wash my cloths with. Dont reduce the flow comming from the bad line you will casue problems. You can water your inside plants if you have any with this water or outside plants.

your RO unit should have a flow restriction built into it. It is usually a valve that should actually be in the closed position, this puts the correct (yet fast on dirty, slow on good) restriction for the unit. Opening the valve FULL is for flushing to RO membrain. As it gets sedimate buildup on the outside, flushing it can improve its performance.

See if yours has a little valve on the output, turn it to be in a typical "closed" position. If your are still making water in that position that is the correct way to run the unit. fully open again is only for flushing the membrain.
