Phytoplankton

Does anyone here add phytoplankton to their tank on a regular basis?

I've got a derasa clam, button polyp and digi coral (?) that need it ??

To be quite Honest I have 3 clams and many different corals and Prefer not to Use it.. IMo all it does is add nutrients to the Tank that Fuel the algae... Is the Derasa samll Less that 3" or so? If so then it should be fed phyto but most suggest removing the calm and placing it into a bowl of Tank water and adding enough phyto to turn the water a litish green... And remove the clam in about 20m or when the water is clear again whichever comes first... Any clam larger than 3" doesnt need it however it doesnt hurt it either... Corals rely on Lights as well as the nutrients in the water to grow along with Ca and alk... IMO I owuld just use it on occasion if even at all...

My derasa is about 4 to 6" (haven't measured it but it is very big). I have noticed a bit more algae growth since I started using it. I'm not too worried about it though because the snails are doing their jobs pretty well.

Has anyone out there used it consistently for several years?

i didnt use it for very long, i used it for about 4 months or so, and before i used it stuff would grow yes, but after using it, everything just took off, doubled in sized in almost a month. back then we only had zoos and softies, but everything loved it. now that everything is in our new tank and under MH, i havnt used it since the tank swap about 4 months ago, but am going to soon, due to the fact that i dont get the growth that i got with it. as far as the algea goes, if it get to be a problem i would just get a few more snails and/or crabs. IMO i would say use it 2 times a week, maybe only once depending on how many corals you have that are filter feeders.

The "Animal House" pet store on top of the hill in Oregon city has DT s Marine Phytoplankton. The 7.5 oz bottle is around $13. They also have the giant bottles if you want a bunch. You have to ask someone for it since they keep it in the fridge. I just started using it this week so I can't give you any feedback on growth etc.

from when ive used DTs i dont like it. it costs alot and seems to go VERY VERY fast. we used a bottle in about two weeks on our 55g, and paid about $12 or so. you can goto soutas saltwater and get a bottle of phytoplankton for about the same i think and it lasts ALOT longer. and if you keep the bottle they offer a discount for refills, so it will save you money in the long run.
