Okay- Radium bulbs- ICE CAP
Okay ive decided to go with a Ice Cap 250W ballast over the ARO because i think the Ice Cap is more proven and seem to have great CS. I will be oredring next Tuesday. Also they are only $7- $10 more than an ARO. Now since i wont run bulbs through cycling i was wondering what everybody thought of RADIUM bulbs. I would like to run a lighting system with just 2- 250W bulbs and no VHOS or T5's. I think Radium 20K's are the favorite followed by XM 20k and then the HAM 14k's. Juat wondering what expirience people have had with any of the three bulbs and how they look with no supplemental lighting? Later Ryan

I would go with the Tried and True Radium bulbs... Hamilton 250w 14k bulbs are reported to turn corals brown... I have personally experienced this issue... And well you know my Stance on XM now LOL... Or you can Go DE bulbs and get the Aquaconnect clones (Pheonix) They are 14k and are supposed to be very nice..

if you are supplementing with vho, use the xm 10k. all the top nothc tanks on RC are runnin xm 10k with supplementation. just do a search for JBNY on reefcentral.com. you will see exactly what i mean

You can run only the Radiums, but you are handicaping yourself. Your corals will have less ability to meet their metabolic needs through light alone, and subsequently less reserve during times of stress or poverty. However, your corals will look great under those lights before they die. R2

No browning in my tank under hammy 14k 250w SE. Been running it going on 5 months and have had quite the opposite, browned out corals coloring up.
Example: bought this in march from Sean
Took this about 2 weeks ago, its got even more purple on the tips now:
Also that browned out cap in the back in the first pick is now bright green and forming the purple rim.

i think the hamiltons lack the par of some other bulbs and my results with them things got very light and pastely, but colors never popped. by far the best tanks ive seen have had either 400watt 20ks or 250 watt 10ks supplemented. if i go with canopy, i will certainly strongly consider the 10k /actinics combo as i feel its proven and flexible

R2--Are you saying that with NO supplement the 20k's will not do your corals any good? But if you have actinics before and after your MH's run you will be O.K.?
Ryannat1--- look at pictures that Ranran has I believe he is running Radiums but not sure of the wattage

Everything else is in the planning stages for a 240 build but I'll be using these from the old setup......400w 20k Radiums w/ VHO supplement and Euro-Reef skimmer.

are they 250 radiums or 400 radiums?? i think the 250s lack a bit in par but he said they will not last as well through disaster if you don;t provide them with better lighting. i suppose if all was flawless at all times really 150s would be plenty for your tank. whoknows. thats how i understood his comment.

I guess I did not read that very well. When I was running 250 I ran Ushio 10Ks with my Vho attinics with good results. It was a little yellow for me though. But thats all personal taste.

if you have not bought your bulbs yet, i really recommend the phoenix combo if you can get some pendants cheap. you can even diy them with a little weekend work. for the price of the phoenix bulbs it is hard to pass up.
if you are game on sunday, you can come by and check them out on my tank tog et an idea of the color.
