What do you think? I have a little experience with this stuff. I have the raw Adobe Illustrator file for print or mods if you want.

if you can get it to me in standard cmyk settings, layered, and properly sized we can go with that. the specifics for submissions are very strict. i need it layered in psd format for starters... i can refomrat and resize on my end if you can get that to me

for starters if you want to size it to 2100X1350 that would help as the file will be large to transfer as it is so having it the exact dimensions will help.

additionally all of the text needs to move in... i know most of you think i have no artistic eye and that is why i was covering the photos up, but in reality there is a large gutter for bleed over, and then cutting that needs to be maintained

again if you send it layered in psd i can make those adjustments.

if people like this we are going with it though, in all honesty this was not meant to be a group collaborative, i spent a good week calling around, getting specifics, working with the manufacturer, and then doing some protos for folks to choose IMAGES from... i need this sumbitted asap and we do not have the luxury unfortunately of doing this by committee. working up cards was something that was offered to the group as an activity months ago, and nobody took any initiative. i do not have time to explain all of the specifics of formatting to 25 free lance graphic artists at this point

no offense is meant here, but a lot of work goes into these kind of things, and it would be helpful if folks want to participate if they volunteer at the beginning of a project, not at the last minute when they hope to make changes.

Thumbs up

Okay R1, I think you've misinterpreted some of the input.

My intentions were not to change your format or discredit the work you've put into this. This thread simply evolved a bit as we casually & playfully voted on the images.

The image options were great and nobody submitted additional images. My intention was just to... nevermind.

Anyways, I appreciate the work you've put into this and whatever gets printed will be just perfect.

this wasn't specifically towards you nikki, it is more to head off any future emails that are like the ones i am now getting, demanding why i am not posting up other folks' ideas that they have been forwarding to me. for reference, aside from the 3 versions of the hermit crab picture posted here, there are 4 more in my email inbox... the key for this thread was to determine what photo, not what layout... i should have been more clear in the first post, i appologize.

fwiw it is very refreshing, even though a bit poorly timed it turns out, to have so many folks so excited to work on something! i am so happy that folks are trying to take a more active role in the shaping of the group and its projects.

if people read back, every post i have made in this has been focusing on selecting a picture, and saying that font, spacing, coloration, etc. would all be worked out later... i thought i was beating around the bush as clearly as possible... but i was mistaken.

sooo in an attempt to keep anyone elses' feelings from being hurt as to why their reworks of the exact same pictures are not up for voting, i decided to nip it in the bud and request that folks stop submitting art to my email box at this point, unless it is purely for their own enjoyment, or if they have an alternate image to provide as the basis for the project (see option 6)

sure a little of it is the little boy saying "hey mom look at this picture i drew for you at school" and she says "thats nice dear, but i can draw a much better one, let's hang it on the fridge instead" but reallistically, timelines are short, and oodles of people trying to frantically take ownership of something that has been on the table for over 2 years just isn't possible at this juncture unless we want to keep pushing back deadlines.

i honestly hope everyone understands. if this frustrates you, think of how much more frustrating it would have been to have a picture you don't like at all on your cards had it not occured to me to make this a public idea!

now that we know we have so many graphic artists, the next version of cards will be opened up much earlier so there can be more input i promise, along with other projects that we may need.

oh and speaking of that... now an art project that we really need addressed in the next month is posters to hang up for advertisement purposes to draw in more members, and i would LOVE it if some folks would start working on concepts for that, as by the beginning of July we should start looking into getting those printed up and distributed

KRUX,
Sorry about the confusion. I do know how hard it is to get a design completed on time and make everyone happy. I do have the file/font for you to edit if you want. Converting it to a 2100X1350 300dpi photoshop file is rather large 13MB so not sure how to get it to you if you want it. Working with fonts in photoshop is a lot harder. If you have Illustrator it is much smaller and easier to work with. Most will take PSD or Al. Anyways you are right on all your points and you can easily copy my layout if you want. I was just trying to show how to make the fonts "pop" on those type of pics that's all. You can apply that style on any pic you want. Great job on all of it and you can PM me with an email address if you want something specific.

I am one of the few who only use photoshop to edit photos and leave the layout and fonts to other applications. There was a time when photoshop could barely add text. You will want a copy in Illustrator if you ever want to resize or print anything larger. Vector art rules!

shawn, if you have icq we can tr4ansfer the larger files easily.

the file actually nees to be even bigger, they want it at 600 dpi!

i think your art is great by the way, it is my personal favorite out of what has been presented. i wish i had illustrator on this machine... you know how hard it is to layer the same type in 2 colors in 2 different sizes and match them up for shadowing?

if i came off wrong i appologize, it is just with so little time left to tinker, i want to focus effort on what can be changed reasonably.

Okay I figured out a way to get you what you need. Click on this link to download the psd file. You will need PSD 6.01 or above. It is only approx. 350KB
http://home.comcast.net/~ssutliff/images/card72dpi.psd

These are just the text layers I converted to PSD. Which by the way is a pain. You're right it is still a nightmare to deal with text in photoshop. I'll bring you a copy of Illustrator at the next meeting which will be my first. And my new tank will be at Waves so I can't miss it. Anyways it is saved as 72dpi for size but you can convert to 600dpi with no loss of quality since it is true text layers, PSD will convert properly without being blurry. Then you can insert any picture you want as a new layer and design away. I also laid out each effect on the text layer so it will be easy for you to copy what I've done not like the "2 colors in 2 different sizes and match them up for shadowing" way. The font shows up as Myriad in Photoshop. You need the font for it to work or Photoshop will sub one out and it won't look right. Or you can pick your own font and it will convert it to that font.

I didn't have that picture in true 600dpi so I couldn't do the picture work. Hope this helps and can't wait to get a card.
