new member with cyno problem

Does any one out there have any good advice on anything that will kill this bacteria i have tried everything natural from water flow (1200 return , 4 1200 maxi jets ) to lighting ( 2 400 w 10000k mh , 2 actinics and 1 50/50 ) all my parameters are good (0 nitrate 0 nitrite 0 ammonia ) and this is getting very frustrating i have been fighting this daily for about 6 mos. any help would be much appreciated

Hi JRT!! and welcome to the club!! Luckily I haven't had to battle with cyno. I saw that you posted your problem in the General Reef Discussion forum which is the best place to ask for help on reef tank problems.

We have our next meeting coming up on the third Sunday of march..hope you can make it.

Woody has an antibiotic that he will give you a capsul of for taking care of the nasty red bacteria that we all love. Turn off your filters and treat your tank. wait a day or so and run your filters again, skim off the ded bacteria (which should now be floating on the top) do a water change.

it will be safe for all EXCEPT macro algae. i have already discussed this with woody as i had a couple small pathces but since i have a sump full of macro and didn't want to kill it i just increased flow on the areas and it has gone away on its own.

Has this hypothosis been tested? I don't see why an antibiotic would effect algae. Cyno is a bacteria which is why it works against it.

You don't want to use a very strong antibiotic though or use to strong a dose because this could effect your beneficial bacteria.
The kind that Woody carries is fairly safe in that regard as it is a weaker kind. (the name escapes me at the moment)

I have a refugium full of macro algae (mostly Feather Caulerpa) that has not been effected (i have done this twice in the last year).
