mantis ID

Hi Aaron,
I was asking Dr. Roy (Dr. Roy Caldwell, the mantis expert) about Bun-bun and he let me know that what you have is a Pseudosquilla ciliata, thought you might want to know. Bun-bun is a Gonodactylaceus mutatus (why name a mantis Bun-bun... read and find out: http://www.sluggy.com/daily.php?date=970901 )

i really didn't take a close look at the mantis but if its a smasher type then its not a ciliata. they are a spearing type. i have a good book on hawaiian critters. the phillapean were introduced during WW2 and have driven the more peaceful usually sandy colored ciliata out of alot of there grounds. check to see what it does when you put a hermit crab in with it!

how did they get introduced during WWII? that's pretty wild.

on another topic, I set the land speed record today for "saw the mantis and removed it"

I got 2 small fire shrimp today. well, one goes and hides in the Fiji LR I have. next thing I know, "pop!" out come this pair of very familiar eyes, followed by the shape I've come to know so well. So, I ran to the store, got some seltzer water, pulled the rock out, and on the second hole, "whoom!" out comes the mantis like a rocket.

so, now I've got 2 mantis tanks.
