Hey if your just looking for Awesome LR you can get some from www.liverocks.com I got all mine from them It was 2.99lb plus shipping.. I think it costed me 170.00 for 40lbs shipped to me here in Newberg, Or... The just raised the prices to like 3.49lb and they are out on a dive right now getting some fresh stuff from the Keys.. I attribute 80% of my success with SW tanks to the quality of LR.. Its all aquacultured so its not disturbing any natural Reefs... Full of life.. If your interested in seeing the rock in person I am hosting the meeting this month.. You are more than welcome to come by and check it out.. I just made another order from them for some Live Base Rock... As for good LFS in the areas It all kinda depends The ones that I have been to has their good and bad sides.. I have yet to visit Ryan down at Advanced but I plan on doing that real soon... You might want to check the Thread a couple days ago that goes into details about alot of the LFS in the general portland-Vancover-Salem area.. As for Information I found www.aquariumadvice.com very informational.. Its like www.reefcentral.com without the attitudes... They are very knowledgable, Friendly and egar to help over at AA.. There are alot of local ppl around here that are helpful as well.. If I can help you in any way please feel free to ask..

James

Upscales in Tualitin has liverock for $5.95 a pound. $4.95 if you buy over 20#.
quality stuff too. if you want cheaper you should buy online.

as for "inexpensive", it is truly a subjective term.
but depending on the specifics you are looking for i could steer you one way or the other to find the most inexpensive specific.

until you let me know what you are looking for, i really can't point you in any particular direction

i can tell you this, newbie...

... buy some books. good authors include Borneman, Sprung, Delbeek, Shimek, Toonen and Seigel to name a few. this is where you will learn the most scientifically sound advice.

... if you have yet to decide on a tank size, remember that a reef tank's major expense is it's lighting and hardware, not the tank itself.

... find a tank with a deep view. generally, cubes are better than long and narrow.

... the cheapest aquariums i have found are at Hollywood Aquarium

... if inexpensive is your game, buy your skimmer and pumps and pretty much all your hardware online. Marine Depot, Premium Aquatics, etc.

... buy quality livestock, including liverock and livesand. please don't get cheap here ( excessively inexpensive ).

... never, ever trust a LFS's word as golden. they are salesman and want to sell you things. i also wouldn't look to them for "learning the ropes". i did this when i started and they confused the hell out of me. i repeat, buy a book(s).

... a bit more cash now (better hardware) and less immediate gratification ("i want fish now!") will be well worth the impatient anxieties you suffer today.

... try not to fall into the snakeoil traps. they are everywhere.

... fly your ideas past a discussion board (this one will do). when you have a particular product or specimen in mind the opinions of a discussion board can be priceless.

feel free to pm me for any specific questions you might have

My take is a little more sympathetic. The number of creatures living in the ocean (and so available to put into our tanks) is mind numbing. And each one has it's own specific habits etc. The guys running the fish shops usually don't have Phd's - and are usually pretty busy trying to earn enough to pay the rent - so they really shouldn't be expected to know everything about everything.

And so it follows that people writing posts on internet forums shouldn't be considered golden words either

The only other thing that I'd add to podman's comments is that I consider Borneman's "Myth 15" to be required reading (and rereading).

woody has base rock for like 2.50/lb, not sure on live rock, but i think its around 3 or 4/lb. if you want the best though, go to soutas, i have NEVER seen better rock then they have, its around $6/lb but wow, best out there. and there is always alot of life on it.

also here is some very nice priced rock, its uncured but you can get 45#'s shipped for around $150ish, and its very light rock so you get more for your money. http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/p...24&pCatId=1669

Soutas has the best rock in town no comparison. Woody's rock is $5.00 a pound and is second rate IMO. Rick and the guys at Soutas helped me when I was fumbling in the dark with my tank. I wish I'd gone there first.........

Hind sight is 20/20

i agree, somewhat.

i believe most LFSs are justified in wanting to mold a customer to thier way of doing things, that is, if their way is in the newbie's best interest.
however, i think it is better for the hobbyist to know the 'ins and outs' of varying types of husbandry and then pick their own path and learn from the experience.
these LFSs differ far too much from one another to expect them to successfully tutor anyone in the proper care techniques of a reeftank and there are a few disputes among them that trigger conflicting advice and even discouraging remarks about one another (and on an off note, i don't expect them to know everything but i do expect them to know any special care requirements regarding the livestock they carry).

for instance, someone here has already pointed to Rick at Soutas as a knowledgable aquarist.. which he is.
but, to speak with him you would walk away with the impression that a wet/dry filter is the end all, be all of the reefing world. now, take this newly "informed" newbie to Waves and have him ask Shuan for a wet/dry.
now, i know of no bad blood between Soutas and Waves (wouldn't say if i did) but one owner will scoff at the other's reefkeeping techniques and vice versa.
.....enter confused newbie

as for the boards, i meant to convey that they are priceless for the panel of opinions. one guy has this skimmer and used to own that POS that you are looking at buying. he can warn you to look here or there before lobbing the cash down and purchasing it.
i am in no way advising anyone to take any reef board member's words as golden.. even my own if that is what was implied

BTW, Soutas LR does look real nice!

I would definately NEVER take an LFS's word over. Yes, there are a couple LFS people here too, so you have to watch out. But, hopefully the fact that they are on this board, means that they know a little more than giving you a wet/dry for your reef tank or telling you to use an undergravel filter (Yes.. I've actually heard that one).

I personally do some research before I walk into a fish store. I think of what I want, and I look it up. If its too agressive, or eats corals, or shoots lasers from its eyes, then I forget it.. otherwise,I write it down. That way when I get to the LFS I can look at my list and remember that that particular fish shoots lasers from its eyes.

Another thing about LFS's... Every one of them claims that their liverock has the most life on them. Be careful with that - the more LIFE on them isn't absolutely the best thing for your existing reef tank, but could be super-duper for your beginner tank. More life usually means more death.

I bought what was supposed to be "FULLY CURED" liverock from an LFS. I picked out my pieces, he put them in a styro and off I went.. I should have done a sniff test before he closed the box.. Those things were FRESH... UNCURED.. Very stinky stinky rock. It was GREAT stuff, but very uncured.

A couple LFS's that I have noticed were rather knowledgable in the craft are:

Advanced Aquarium in Salem (VERY GOOD!)
Cayes Aquarium in Portland (Great store, very knowledgable!)
Coral Visions (Pretty good shop, most of his fish look like they have ick, but nice semi-knowledgable guy)

Of course, I am still quite new at this hobby, but I feel I know more than most people wandering through an LFS or working there.

Anyways, enough venting.
