heater failed! Temp low! Advice?

The Ebo Jaeger in our ten gallon failed over night and this morning the temp was down to 70 F.

My husband is out to buy a new heater and I have taken some tank water, warmed it, and added it back to the tank.

Temp is now at 64 (edited, meant to say 74 F)

How should I go about bringing the temp back up?
Just put in the new heater and let it bring the temp back up all at once, do it in steps?

So far, the inhabitants look okay (snails are alive, zoos leather, GSP, shrooms, xenia all show no apparent signs of discomfort), but we haven't seen Pernikus, the yellow watchman, yet. His friend the pistol shrimp is alive, because we heard him clicking.

I would slowly bring it back up to temp about 5F per 12hrs or so.. To avoid any more shock that things might have... As for Ebo I have no Idea whats wrong with them as of late... I have had 2 burn out in the 3-4months..

Thanks!

I'll take it in steps, then...

PS: Pernikus just peeked out of one of his tunnels, so everyone is accounted for

BTW, do I have to watch for illness further down the road from this shock?
And what type of heater should be be looking at? For now we ended up with a Visi-Therm, which I've heard bad things about...
But I suppose just about any heater can go bad.

Yes, our daughter named our yellow watchman after a character in a roman play they enacted at school

And now I'm off to return the Visi-Therm, since it doesn't get the temp above 74, even at it's highest possible setting!

Get a stealth... I use the 200w model on my tank and you can hardly see it. Good buy.

That's also made by Visi-Therm, right?

Right now I'm trying a Via Aqua Titanium heater, but it's a bit long for a 10G, and very, very visible (shiny silver tube).
I like the temp adjustment being apart from the heater, outside the water.
Makes for much easier temp regulation.

the biggest thing to watch for in the next couple days will be ich, it strikes when big temp swings occur.

I'll be watching for ich and hope Pernikus will be spared!

The leather looks a little off now. Delayed reaction?

hmm...

74 F is really not that bad...I wouldn't worry too much about temp shock. Just plug in the heater...

I will never buy another ebo. Every one i have had either fails or cannot keep a steady temp. My last ebo on my 10 gal had to be set at 72 to keep the temp at 80, and my 150w on my 29 had to be set at 86 to keep it 80. I got a marineland 50w 6" heater now and it keeps the temp flawlessly. I love it.
