green algae?

I have a very hard, encrusting green algae growing on the glass in my tank. I have been told it is coralline algae and that if I add more strontium to my water it will turn pink or purple. Is this true. It is very difficult to scrape off.

thanks

I've tried using a razor blade (the straight single edged kind not the shave your face kind ) - works Ok.

Picked up a plastic scrapper that holds a box knife with the sharp side out - and that works Ok to. Little more comfortable.

I finally broke down and bought a scraper with a metal edge and a 24" handle at Petco. It's not as sharp as the blades above, but my fingers are drier and less cramped than before, and it works good enough for me.

I've noticed that if I wipe one of those magnetic algae scraper thingy's over it - that it'll wear it down (and eventually away). I give mine the magnetic treatment like every other day or so.

I don't think you can change the color of anything with chemical additives. You can turn things white by stressing them out, but I don't that that's what you had in mind!

PS - My rule of thumb about additives: If you don't test for it - don't add it.

I think the green stuff is the same thing used in greenwater? Correct me if I'm wrong. All I know is that when I scrape it off the glass, the polyps come out on everything, even the nocturnal polyp extenders.

I don't think this'll turn pink/purple, as I have both at the same time...

green coraline, i hate it, chewie hates it, we just scrape it away like normal coraline. my purple and pink grows along side it. i dont know about it changing color though... just clean your glass every day with the magnet and it will never build up. it does look rather nice when it encrusts rocks and powerheads in my opinion however, so i let it alone on anything but the glass.
