Good place to get LR

Hi all, i'm new to the site but glad i found it. Its nice to have peoples input who live in the same area. I have been reading and learning about reef tanks for 8 months or so now and am ready to take the plunge. I have kept a 55 gal FOWLR in the past but no corals. My first reef tank will be a 10 gal nano. If it works out i'll have to rethink my current 55 gal FW tank :P

Anyways, I just have a question as to the best place to get LR. I can drive to portland if need be. I have been to a few places here in eugene but the rock seems pretty bare. Some insight from others who might have gotten great LR somewhere would be great. TIA!!!!

Even at $6 per lb it beats the $30-$50 shipping charges. Thanks for the quick response!!

Any other suggestions?????

I'll have to admit never been to soutas. But Seahourse in NE portland has the best LR and for the best price 4.90/lb and the LR I got from Woody was cured the best and has the best growth.

Just be prepaired to self serve if Woody isn't around. (woody's the owner of the shop) The other guys arn't really that helpful...also you have to brave NE Portland and their streets

Advanced in Salem, but Ryan want's 6$/lb a bit high for me but also very good LR.

I would stay away from online...alot disagree with me but I like to see what I buy.

Ps...their used to be a post of alot of peoples experience of LFS around Oregon / South Washington area. It's a good insight and heads up on some of the shops around town and whom to buy from and whom to stay away from. Well worth reading it.

Their is also a place out of Albany that would be closer to you but I can't remember the shops name.

IMO i would check out Liverocks.com They are coming back with a nice fresh batch of Keys LR on April 9th. It is very cheap but Aweosme looking LR.. You can ask anyone that has been here what the LR looks like... The Liverock is I belive about 4.50lb shipped here to Oregon.. It comes with Many many hitchhikers and is almost completely cured as its shipped wet overnight.. They just raised prices but 6 months ago when I got mine it was 4.38lb delivered to my door overnight.. You will never find LR that looks this good..

i am steering clear of Woody's rock until he stops keeping it outside in unheated water.
if "best cured" means 'most dead' then i believe Kevin is spot on.
Woody's rock was probably below 50 degrees when i looked at it last january and it looked completely barren of life. when i asked about the rock inside the shop i was told it had just been moved from outside.

i am becoming convinced that Soutas has the best livestock in town presently.
i used to think Waves was where it was at, but lately i have seen less and less there that interests me.
Rick always has interesting things that i don't see often and if you want big show sized peices of rock his shop is the one to visit.
Upscales is cheaper (as cheap as Woody's with the discount) for what appears to be a comparable product but Soutas does have a larger selection to choose from.

i bought rock recently and collected it from a few different sources all being local. i waited until upscales had new arrival rock and went in and bought some foul smelling fiji. if you buy over twenty pounds there is a discount that rivals any online price. it is a tad more (pennies, really) than you would pay at the cheapest online stores but you get to hand pick the stuff so i am happier that way.
i then waited until his next shipment and bought another twenty+ batch, and soon after topped it off with Waves marshall island rock that was really fresh off the plane and funky too.

it takes some additional time to establish some order within your water parameters, but in my opinion, "cured" does mean 'partially dead'. i think it has to be better to buy as much life as possible (AKA "uncured") and deal with the additional die-off then to buy something that has already suffered atransit and one brutal water conditioning and then has to suffer another transit and water conditioning to meet it's final resting place.

well, that was lengthy!

The Marshall Island rock can be very fresh in this area if you plan ahead and buy on Monday when it has just arrived. All this rock is distributed by VFE ( Vance Fisher Ent.) Vance brings in the rock direct from the Marshalls. We got 7 boxes this week, stripped all the algae off, brushed lightly is saltwater, and tanked it under MH with Ca reactor and skimmer, and it already looks great! The rock is light per volume ( 210 lbs fills a 5ft 100g to the top ) with moderate void space, but is about twice as much to buy as premium Fili. Even though light, this rock does not tend to break up in shipping as much as Tonga Branch, and is much easier to work with. Well, that's what I have to say about it! Ryan

What kind of lighting / filtration are you going to use? As you know the smaller the reef tank the less margin for error there is.

Have you been by my shop over in Springfield. I actually just sold out of rock but I will be getting more next week. It is only $4 a pound. We change 50% of the water in the tank once a week. If I was starting up a new tank I personally would go for uncured rock as long as you don't have anything in the tank. It will cycle your tank for you and if you keep up with your water changes and dosing you can save a lot of the things that come in on it.

96W coralife quad. 10000k and 50/50 actinic. I will be buying uncured rock and using some lifeless rock i kept from my previous tank. It will be a slow process to seed the lifeless rock but i have patience

Well, I bought some fiji from upscales that was rather stinky - but it was great stuff. Had some mussels on it, and even a couple feather dusters and some other various things. I even got some sort of weird looking cuke. No mantis or anything..

I will agree with cj10488 about one thing. LiveRocks.com DOES have excellent stuff. Its only out of the ocean for 14-18 hours tops before its in your tank. Very little actual die-off occurs.

Lots of hitchhikers, etc.... my next liverock purchase will be liverocks.com most likely. Atleast 40lbs of it. I need a good 80lbs or so more of liverock, so ordering all at once may be a good idea.

If somebody wants to get a large order going, let me know.. I'll be ready to order within the next couple weeks.

Impur:
Seeding rock isn't THAT long of a process. In a healthy tank your dead stuff can become live in only a couple months. Maybe you should have somebody "babysit" your dead rock for a while.

I will certainly stop by your store soon. When do you get your shipments of LR?

I don't know anyone with a reef tank. Its only 2 pieces of rock, maybe about 5 pounds total so i'm not real worried about it. Just excited to get started

Totally.. it is exciting.. If my tank was more mature, I'd volunteer to host your rock for a bit... Heck, I'll still do it if you can make it up to the portland area, but I don't have a LOT of life to share.... but atleast it would be liverock... I don't even have my halides yet.. so it wouldn't be completely encrusted in algae either.. but would have some. Anyways.. whatever works. I'm SURE there is somebody with a better tank on here that will help ya out.
