Brine Shrimp Direct - share order??
Hey folks,
I'd like to put together an order from Brine Shrimp Direct ( http://www.brineshrimpdirect.com) for the following items:
Tahitian Blend
Golden Pearls - 20 to 80 um sizes
Selco
Basically, if there are eight people who will pool order the stuff with me, we can purchase larger quantities. The price per oz gets much less if one can purchase in larger quanties and we can save significant $ on shipping. For instance, the Tahitian blend for a 125 ml bottle costs about $14, whereas the liter costs $56 (1/2 price per ml for the liter size). We'll have to purchase some nalgine bottles or something like that to divide the stuff, but I think that we could basically get the stuff for over 1/2 off when you factor in the shipping costs.
An estimate for dividing the stuff is:
Tahitian blend - 125 ml ~ $7
Golden Pearls - 2 oz ~ $1.10
Selco - I'm just guessing - 125 ml ~ $7
I would estimate that the shipping and packaging would be about $25 or about $3.00 each. I don't have a good feeling for the cost of the bottles. Does anyone have a source for these things? I can't imagine paying much over $1.50 each. I estimate that with shipping, the stuff would cost us individually over $40 each (including shipping)
I figure that we could probably divide the stuff up at the next reef club meeting. What do you think?
Please respond and thanks,
Dave

Who's eating this stuff?
What are you feeding your brine shrimp to? Just currious. I am only feeding my tank 1 cube of frozen formula one, 2 mL Iodine and about 5 mL of Phytoplanton. I have a few sps and lps, a couple of softies and 'shrooms, a couple of tangs and a clown plus a few other fish. Flame suit on. Let's hear your opinions.

Puntific,
I am definitely not an expert but this is what I understand why these products are beneficial for your reef tank.
* The reef system has tons of plankton/fauna that is swept in from the open sea or the lagoon near bye. This plankton is the basis for the life chain on the reef. Many of our tanks do not have sufficient plankton/fauna to support much of the beneficial life that will keep our systems working properly and provide live, natural food to the critters nearer the top of the food chain. I understand that the Tahitian blend and the golden pearls help provide the base nutrition for our tanks.
*Selco is a wonderful supplement that is loaded with vitamens and HUFA (highly unsaturated fatty acids) that is needed by many marine fish (and I believe corals). I've used the stuff for a couple of years and I saw the results by it reversing the lateral line disease that my wife had on her Singapore Angle, etc. It's good stuff.
Hey other folks, please chime in with your thoughts/understanding.

Anyone know how these products compare to others in the marketplace like DTs and any other brands I'm unaware of?

Are these things 'ready to use'? Or do they need to be prepared in some way? Thanks for the help guys!

The Tahitian Blend is a concentrated form of phytoplankton. It's not the same as DT, in the sense the phytos are not alive, but the nutrition value is still there. I feed my tank every 2 - 3 days (or when I remember to) with Tahitian Blend and my corals seems to like it. The recommend dosage is about 1 - 2 drops per 10 gallons. They said you should mix it then dump the mixture into your water, but I just squirt some into my outlet flow and let the current mix it in. If you do buy extra, put some in the freezer to keep it fresh. Other wise, they said its good in the fridge from 6 month - 1 year.

I have a email and a phone message into BSD asking them for a firm price on the Selco. I also asked them to price the stuff out for individual 125 ml bottles of Selco and Tahitian blend and for 2 oz containers of the golden pearls. I should have the firm pricing for the stuff by Tuesday. I count 6 of us in for the Tahitian blend and golden pearls, and 6 of us in for the Selco. Let's rattle the bushes and try to find two more people who want the Tahitian blend and the golden pearls and three more for the Selco. That way, if needed, we can purchase the liter bottle of Selco and Tahitian blend and divide it up in Portland if BSD doesn't give us a deal on the 125 ml bottles.
Let's find more people interested in these goods!
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Everyone!
I have used the Tahiatian Blend (sp?) product from brine shrimp direct now for a couple years. It is a good product. It is absolutly REQUIRED that you keep this product in the deepest, coldest part of your freezer!!!!!!!! There is a chemical in the product that keeps it from freezing and it remains viscous at all times. Kept at below freezing, the product degrades. It had been recommended by, I believe, Rob Toonen that if you left this bottle out on your counter overnight, it would be wise to just toss it and buy a new one.
Remember that a little bit goes a VERY long ways!!!! I have purched like, three bottles of this stuff and I throw it out after a little over a year or so. I usually toss the bottle and it is still about half full! You want to remember that since this phyto is dead...it is just like feeding flake or frozen food or whatever to your tank. Unlike DT's, this product is NOT alive, it is cryogenicly(sp?) preserved. It has been said thouogh that it is possible to start a live culture using this product. Meaning you can bring it out of the deep freeze and bring it back to life!!!! Also unlike DT's, this product does not take up nutrients from the tank. Uneaten, Live DT's will actually "take in" nutrients from the tank since it is liveing. Uneaten Tahiatian Blend actually gives off nutrients as it degrades. This stuff is VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY concentrated!!!!!!!!! I started with like 2 drops every other day on my 100gal and s l o w l y ramped up. I have noticed excess algae blooms when feeding too much of this stuff. BE CAREFUL! It sounds like ReefCam has fed more to his tank and not had a problem but each tank is different.
I had talked to Aaron prior about the dropper bottles. I am looking into getting some. I will keep ya'll posted!
Dennis

feedings...
I am interested in getting some of this stuff, but I still don't really know what to exclude if I start adding this. How similar is it to Kent Marine's PhytoPlex? Does anyone else feed frozen formula one? Any suggestions as to how I should change my feeding?
