Bad Anemone?

Not sure of the name but thought I read a thread a while back about an Anemone that would take over your tank. I think I may have a small outbreak and need some adivce on identification and removal.

This thing appeared out of a rock in my tank and in a matter or three weeks has turned into 5! Fairly small, about the size of a quarter, but seems to be splitting at an astounding rate. Browinsh/purple color and thin tenticles (sorry no pics, camera is out of state).

Any advice?

Thanks Sc00by

P.S. Sorry to all of you I was setting up trades with, family emergencies have prevented me from doing anything including taking care of my tank I'll catch up with all of you soon.

probably aiptasia, a very annoying pest, I had a bad infestation on a used setup I bought and used joes juice, found at www.joesjuice.com and it worked well, also peppermint shrimp may work, do a search for aiptasia and find a picture and see if thats what you have.

heres a link to start with http://www.aquarium.net/faqs/aiptasia.shtml

i think i know what your talking about scooby, we have the same thing in our tank. if its the same thing its not aiptasia, but some kind of glass anemone or something like that. ill post a pic in a few mins, dont have any on this pc, but ill find some if we have one. they spread VERY fast, we started with 2 and everything was fine for about 7 months, but then BAM, 5, then 10, now that they are in our new tank under MH, they spread to like 20+. and peppermints wont touch them.

Yea, I'm not sure what these are. But here's a follow-up question about Peppermint Shrimp... Do they go after Rose's? How reef safe are they? I thought I read something about their distructive nature in reefs? Could have been something else but thought I'd ask.

here is a pic of what i was talking about, dont really have any other info other then they spread like mad. either way i would try joes juice to try and stop them from spreading, they will over run your tank in no time. HTH

about the peppermints. ive read that also, heard that tank raised ones wont do anything to a reef, but wild caught ones will. we have 2 in our main tank with corals and never have had any problems with them. ive seen lots of people with them in with corals and no problem. but it could also be a matter of each shrimp is different, so i would say if your not sure about them, not to get them. also not all peppermints will eat apt. in your tank. ours ate a few but are leaving the new ones alone now.

Found it! It's Aiptasia. Joe's Juice page (Thanks Sanblas!) Looks like I'll try some Juice first and then go from there.

Thanks everyone!

nathan, do yo know what those are? theyre not zoanthids? I think I might have one. when I first got my second hand setup (which has almost every pest there is) I thought it was a majono so I joe's juiced the crap out of it, thought it was dead, it bleached, but now a month or two later, its starting to come back and gain color....so I thought it was just a zoanthid or palythoa that I had mistakenly juiced...anyone know what these are, and should I remove it, since joes juice obviously doesnt work.

they not zoos as far as i know, there some kind of pest though, although the type i dont know. ive asked on other boards for an ID and never got one. we tryed to shoot it with boiling water and they went away for a little while then came back and started to spread. we are going to try joes juice once woody gets some in and hope that works, but they spread like wild fire.

I believe that copperband & 8 line butterfies will eat that evil thing. Also some coralvore butteflies will eat it as they destroy your reef.

In the past, I have injected kalkawasser into evil things and they die. (-:

if you have the same thing as I do, then joes juice wont work, I juiced it like mad, and it just bleached for a month or so and came back...I have some extra joe's juice if you want to experiment though, better than buying a whole bottle.

mine never spread though, although I didnt give it much of a chance. Unfortunately, its in a 10g, so too small for a butterfly

well if joes juice didnt work then yea no reason for us to buy some. maybe we'll try some kalk. really need to get them out of our tank, they are spreading at about 5 a week or so, could be more but thats all i see of them.

nathan, your anemone's are called majano, just as bad as aipastia, worse in my opinion. they spread just as fast, and no shrimp nor fish will eat them, to get rid of them, i have had luck with boiling water, kalk, and joes juice. if you look close at them, they almost look like baby bubble anemone, am i right? some do some dont, but alot have little bubbles on the tips..
