Anyone want some phytoplankton?

I've growing some Nannochloropsis

Here's a short description ripped off from DT's website:
Quote:
DT's Live Marine Phytoplankton previously contained only one species of Nannochloropsis ( N. Oculata), a very small species @ 2-3 microns. Some reef inhabitants that feed on phytoplankton consume larger cell sizes, and although a very nutritious species, the small cell size of N. oculata could limit the number of animals that are fed.
Turns out that I didn't read the (ah hem) fine print on the fertilizer "Mass Pack" I bought. The part where it says that the pack makes 10,000 liters - or 2,500 gallons.

So I was thinking about boiling up a gallon or so. If you want some - I'd hope that you'd bring an empty container and we'll either split it up between everybody, or if you're the only one that wants some we can just swap containers.

I kinda need to know like this week, cause it'll take awhile to grow into some sort of density that'll be useful. It looks like just plain ole green water, and it should have a SG of 1.025. So, in theory, you just pour the stuff in. You could remove a like amount of water to maintain SG if you wanted (I do).

I doubt that this stuff would keep for anything like a day or two - unless you wanted to start your own culture setup. And that's a topic of another thread/time.

I'd like some, I'll bring a MT container. I have done some reading about a doing a culture setup. Don't know if I'll do that when what you give me I'll do some more reading about it first. Might be fun to try.

Well I don't know what an MT container is, but as long as it holds water.

I'll make this offer for each meeting that I attend. I suspect that while the weather is foul my attendance record will be pretty good So it's a pretty good bet you can get some more next month.

If you decide to try your hand raising your own - let me know ahead of time and I'll mix up a batch of fertilizer concentrate - enough for 60 liters or so. I figure if I can do it - then anyone with an air pump and a window should be able to.

If you bring a small amount of that fert I'll pay you for that share of it. Then I can try to propagate the culture.

I have absolutely no knowledge on the stuff, but i will be happy to learn about it at the meeting if you want to bring some by and show me what to do... maybe growing phyto can be a topic of discussion at a future meeting, sounds like folks are interested.

All: I'll bring the stuff to the next meeting. If you can't make the December meeting - then January. If you really can't wait until then - PM me and we'll work something out.

For those wanting the fertilizer concentrate - it should be stored in an opaque container - so you might start scrounging one up. Other than that I'll assume you've done your own research and have the rest of the stuff you'll need. If you havn't done the research I'd suggest hanging loose for which ever meeting Krux and I work out. I'll go over the process step by step and go over the equipment you'll need.

Krux: Be happy to. If you let me know the meeting I'll work up a dog and pony show. I figure you've already packed the adgenda for the December meeting - so maybe January ??

Oh yea costs. Lets see it's $14 for 10,000 liters. So for say 60 liters would cost 8 cents. Forget it. I've gotten some very nice freebie frags - this is my way of returning the favor to the community as a whole. Once I get down to my last 1,000 liters maybe we can arrange a group buy or something.
