10 gallon tank with 5.5 fuge how to?

I am currently running a 10 gallon nano tank. I am interested in turning my old 5.5 glass tank into a fuge thats sits below in the stand. I have not a clue on what parts are needed or where to buy them? I would assume I need some kind of overflow box inside the tank and some kind of pump to sit inside of the fuge.
Anyone see any weblinks that might help me in this?
I would also be able to pay someone in frags (softies) or beer if they could come over and help me get this working.

Have you thought about a HOB fuge for your nano? I think that would work better for ya if ya got the room on the back of your tank.Phil

Yeah, I was looking to get an AC300 or 500 but I thought the extra volume of a 5.5 might be a little better. I could also use a gravity fed doser inside my stand. I might go the hang on the back route if I could find a ac300 or better for cheap.

it would be easiest if one or the other tank could be drilled... are they both glass?

then you would be best served by getting a hang on back overflow for the display, and running it down to the fuge, using it the same way you would a regular sump flow wise, but instead plant it with macros, have sand and some rock rubble etc.

bijjy might have some spare overflow boxes, i saw one or two over at his place, not sure what he is doing with them, but he might be willing to sell one of them.

Sounds good. My only nit would be the size of the overflow box. I woud want it as small as I could get away with.
So my next question would be what size pump? I would like it to be enough flow so I wouldn't need to run a power head in the main tank. The other issue I guess would be how fast the water would be running through the sump. The longer contact with the sand/cheato/live rock combo the better, correct?

Also what would I drill on the sump? Cant I just put the tube straight in the tank?

if you do a hang on back overflow no drilling is needed in either tank.

you could get away with a big powerhead, or a small submersible pump, such as a mag 2 or 3. you want long contact time, but your average powerhead has a hard time pushing against 4 or 5 feet of head, so you need to use something fairly robust.

for more flow, you could design a really easy hang on back over the top closed loop powered by a mag 3, that would give you all the flow you want. if you plumb it in 1/2" pvc it would be very small and unobtrusive.

Ok, Now I really have my homework in front of me. I have no idea what a closed loop means.

Closed loop takes water from the tank and just returns it to the tank. Water does not exit the loop until its back in the tank, hence closed loop.

I also was going to do a 3-5 gal sump for my 10 gal. I ended up going with the HOB AC500 fuge and its great. I got the surface skimmer attachment and the flow is perfect. I use the fuge to grow out frags but will be adding macro soon.

Yeah, it looks like I am just going to stick with that setup. The cost of the plumbing/pump and the hassle is starting to sway me in that direction. Anyone have a ac500 laying around?

You can get a new one at Petsmart for like $32. Just print out the AC500 and its price off their website and take it to the store. They honor the web prices too. In the store its like $75.

Did you shave down the impeller? Or is it stock on your 10 gallon?

you have to print the page the day you go, they will only honor it if the same day's date is on the bottom of the page.
