I'm here, just bugged out! Trying hard to get my tank back on-line correctly, and I've screwed up a few times...I'm feeling kinda defeated and just trying to hang in there....can't really buy stuff 'cause I just gotta fix and get things right first...but I'm checking in and reading stuff....

Mechanical!!! I replumbed.......and I did it wrong.....so I redid it .....and there are leaks, not big, drops, enought so it can't be left the way it is. So I'm trying to fix them. Most of the problems seem to be threaded joints, so no biggy, just more plumber tape, replace and check it out again. Only to find it's not enough, so I pull it all apart again. Put it back together again, only to find there is something wrong, but what? Then it occurs to me I haven't put any ball valves or gate valves to stop water should I need to change things out...so I go to my local HD only to find cruddy ball valves that neither I nor the customer service person can turn, and there are no gate valves except copper. I'm bummed. So in the mean time I fill the sump and let it leak a little so I have circulation in the main tank, it drips and I mop. My weekend plumbing job has hit two weeks and I'm bummed. There is a sudden burst of I think baby apitista in my tank, and I see bryopsis, small that I'm working on and know is related to not having my skimmer on line....It'll come but part of me wants to give up, (that wont ever happen-I've been bitten) but blah!

ouch ! sorry i asked .
if you have a true value / ace hardware store check there for valves.
i have found a few plastic gate valves there . if no gate valves there look at their ball valves , they are a little different than h.d. and lowes valves , plus the ball valves in the stores are made in good ol' US of A ! so are there unions . as far as the little leaks go, some of them will probally seal their selves , once gunk starts building in the pipes . don't over do it on the pipe tape , to much and they will leak ! four to five wraps on the threads should be enough .

Oh, shoot! Don't plumb with a fully cured tank and live animals. My piping was glued while off the tank, the regluing was dabbing on the outside of the pipe joints (which would have been better to do when the tank was empty!) and the taking apart and redoing was putting more plumbers tape on threaded joints. I multiple times had to empty out the sump because I didn't have a valve to prevent the water from entering the pipe for me to take off and fix. If your gonna replumb your set up, be cautious and place your tanks creatures in containers and such-wouldn't want anything to die. The glue had cured a good 24 hours before water went through the pipe and I have changed out the water 3.5 x in the sump (thats 350 gals, ugh!). I didn't notice any changes to any live animals in the tank, but the tank is about 360 gals and I'm using and changing charcoal frequently-still by no means would I recommend doing things this way!!!

A lot of poeple came here initially but most are gone! It is ok, we can still play.

I Have used PVC cement but I let it dry for about a day or so, my tank has fish and coral and never had any problem.

I think allot of it has to do with summer winding down right now, people are spending their time getting in the last few outdoor activities, and house projects rather than posting on a board.

I think come winter it will pick back up again.

It's so easy to run a BB tank that sometimes it seems to become rather boring from the lack of problems, at least if you're used to having to "fix" something every couple of weeks and such. I for one don't miss having to look online like a madman for solutions to "problems" arising from my SB.

So in a sense the lack of movement in this forum is a victim of it's member's own success. Now that's irony.

summer winding down !!!! not quick enough for me we're still in the mid to upper 80's !
as far as glueing of pvc pipe i give you cudo's for being cautious , but man 24 hrs dry time . man i've glued pipe and ran water thru it in 15 minutes !
as far as the glue being toxic , if you glue it correctly without getting glue on the inside of the pipe it won't leak in , the water pressure would push the glue out , so the glue never comes in contact with the water . for those that have problems with leaks at the glue joints either you may not be using enough glue or your not getting the pipe far enough in the fitting . next time you have to glue some fittings try this . when you go to glue the pieces together ,slop the glue around , covering one inch or so of the lengthof the pipe your glueing, try not to get glue on the first 1/16 " to 1/8" of the pipe , as you insert the pipe twist the pipe in one direction atleast one full turn . as you do this yes glue will be pushed out (this is what you want ) , and the glue should then make a complete seal around the piece . you can wipe of any excess with a paper towel just try not to disturb the "fillet" of glue at the bottom edge of the fitting .
wow ! we must be slow cause i'm talking about how to glue pipes !
p.s. talking with a former plumber turned co- worker , he says forget about the primer , it is nothing more than a slow drying glue put on to pre-soften the pipe . he said he never used on any of his jobs and never had a problem because of not using primer ! but then again he works with me now so i don't know what that says about his plumbing skills ! just kidding this guy "can " plumb !
